Dr. Freudenthal, the guest speaker, is professor of civil engineering at the Haifa Tech- nion. An authority on structures, foundations, applied mechanics and the theory of materials, he has served as consulting engineer in charge of construction projects and as - chief engineer of the Haifa Marine Trust Ltd. Now a visiting professor at Columbia University, Prof. Freu- denthal was the winner of the 1947 Normal Medal for the best paper of the year on the subject "Safety of Structures," awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has been accorded many other honors in connection with his work on fatigue of materials. His papers haVe been published by the Royal Society of London and haVe appeared in Proceedings of Civil Engi- neering in the U. S. In Warsaw, in 1936,- he was awarded an international prize for a design for a • bridge over the Vistula River. He has designed. a 2,000 foot sewage tunnel for the city of Tel Aviv. Aptekar has been a 'director of the svnior unit of Fresh Air Camp, Farband Camp, and Camp Ha- bonim.. For the past eight years he has served as director of Camp Livingstone near Cincinnati. He is the author of articles on camping and educati-On, and a frequent speaker in these fields. He has been a member of the Association for many years, and is a past state treasurer. He is also a member of the Religious School board of Temple Israel, the board of the Metropolitan De- troit Science Teachers, the na- tional board of the American Camping Association, and is past president of the club leaders' group of the Jewish Center. Schaver of Detroit, five years ago gave $50,000 for Palestine, and this fund has since been boosted to close to $100,000 for the erec- tion of the Library at Beit Berl —the institute for the training of diplomats functioning near Tel* Aviv, in memory of the late Berl Katznelson. Like his brother's, Shever's gift was made on the. occasion of his 50th birthday. Announcement of the handsome contribution was made Sunday night at the annual gathering which marked the opening of the Israel Histadrut Campaign of St. Louis of which Nathan Shever is general chair- man. Isaac Hamlin, executive sec- retary of the National Committee for Labor Israel, was the speaker at Sunday's gathering here at the Chase Hotel and Saul Meisels was the soloist.
