EXEMPLIFYING THE sports-
manship and inter-racial spirit of
AZA . .. guests - at the banquet
ending its convention in Detroit,
last week, included the Negro
boys of Brewster Center basket-
ball team which recently defeat-
ed the AZA All-Star squad .. .
and as last year, when the Cath-
olic lads of Boys Club were in-
vited, the visiting _players were
given ovations and continuous
recognition throughout the eve-
ning . .. The Brewster- boys re-
mained standing throughout sing-
ing of the AZA song and "Hatik-
vah" . . . and then all sang the
"Star Spangled Banner."

IT IS SIGNIFICANT to note
that the life-saving work of In-
fant Service Group was original-
ly founded out of death . . while
family of Barbara Goldsmith sat
in- mourning for the little girl
who had just.passed away ... and
visiting friends decided to form,
in her memory, such a group of
young women . . . That was 14
years ago, in 1935 ... since which
time Infant Service Group has
grown to proportions never con-
ceived by the original members
. . . and has received a degree of
community devotion that places
it on" a high pedestal of admira-
tion and respect . .. The 140 ISG
women, led by Mrs. Ann Grace,
president, are consecrated to car-
ing for needs, babies .. . from
time of birth until they are two
years old . . . supplying them
with food, clothing, medicine and
all other essentials for happy,
proper living . . . A new project
by Infants Service Group is the
maintaining of a four-crib ward
at Children's Hospital . .. avail-
able for needy infants, regardless
of race, color or creed . . . The
wonderful ISG women have also
voted to maintain one spastic
child (born without control of
muscles) at Detroit Orthopedic
Nursery School . . . to teach it
how to eat, walk, etc. .. . Their
annual Dinner-Dance and Show
. . . Jan. 23 . . at Masonic
Temple, is a fund-raising high-
light of the social season . .
with Eleanor (King) Reisman
directing her tenth show . . .
composed of talented members
in the group.

TO AT LEAST one little lady
in the community, all the merry-
making on New Year's Eve could
easily be taken as being in her
honor . . . since Diane Rochelle
Rosen was celebrating her sev-
enth birthday on Dec. 31 . . . and
our little niece was having her
own private sessions with Father
Time . . . her mommy and daddy,
Mr. and Mrs. David A. Rosen,
making doubly sure of that with
a party for the small folks and
one for the grown-ups.

WHEN THE GREAT Gregor
Piatigorsky comes to town . . . to
appear, Feb. 8, at Music Hall .. .
it's a cinch that Harry Bradlin,
the real estate broker and devot-
ed music lover, will engage the
famous cellist in a bit of reminis-
cing . . -. Both attended IMperial
Conservatory together in Ekater -
inoslav . . . changed to Dnepro-
.petrowsk after the revolution ...
"I wanted to be a great pianist,"
says'llarry, "but everybody tried
to talk me out of it. They said I'd
never learn to love music if I
had to listen to myself play it!"
SPEAKING OF THE Piatigor-
sky concert . . . he'll, be soloist

which is conducted by Syd-
ney Baron, the Toledo man with
almost as many friends in our
community as those in his home

FIVE WEEKS AGO, a 10-year-
old community lad was rushed to
Highland Park General Hospital
. .. after running in front of an
oncoming car at Gladstone and
14th . . . His little bones were
broken and teeth knocked out of
a smashed jaw . . . Doctors gave
little hope for him to live . . . But
the youngster rallied to pull
through , . . He was going to be .
well, again . . . that is, excepting
the condition of his jaw ... which
was ski seriously injured that a
possibility was evident that he
may never speak dgairi . . . un-
less a very good specialist could
be gotten ... and still the chances
would be slim . . . But getting a
specialist was out of the question
. . . that meant money .. . and
the lad's parents were very poor
. . . With dad out of work, rais-
ing the immediately-needed funds
was almost as difficult as stop-
ping the tears being shed .. .
However, it 'had been forgotten
that humanitarianism was not
founded on monetary principles
. . . that some people d6 - things
because their way of living in-
cludes helping their fellow, man
.. . Dr. Herbert J. Bloom is such
a person .. . and busy as he is,
the fine oral surgeon in the David
Broderick Tower twice visited the
hospital . . . and performed two
operations . . all without charge
. . to make a sorrow-stricken
mom and dad smile again through
bitter tears .. . when the little
boy recently said his first word
since the accident
