The new year marks 17 year's that I have worked for the
Histadrut.- For six years I worked on the campaign, feeling it was
my duty as a Jew to work on behalf of - a Jewish homeland in
Palestine.
Then, in 1937, my family and I visited Palestine. It was there
that I saw at .first hand the tremendous accomplishments of the
Histadrut. It was on this visit
V also that I saw how much there'
as to do *and how little there
Was with which to do it

Marvel
atthe unbelievable
achievernents over a comparative-
ly •-.short period.• But miracles
didn't just happen. These marvel§
are the result of 28years of
Ceaseless •toil by men of fision.
Their institutions and enter-
prises, including Kupat Holim,
Solel Boneh, Bank Hapoalim,
Ihuvah and others are the result
of their sweat and toil.
There is much' which we as
American Jews can do to help
them: If the members of the
Histadrut can in addition to sac-
rificing and giving their lives in
the present struggle, -voluntarily
tax themselves $15,000,000 so
that countless numbers of new-
comers can he absorbed into the
country, then I don't think it too
much to ask American Jews to raise $10,000,000 in 1949.
Chairman, Executive Board, DetrOit Histadrut Campaign
The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor for Israel) was formed in May,
1920. its planners were the spirited youth of Europe, with a sprinkling of elders, who
were determined to shake the dust of the lands of their exiles and humiliation and
who were determined to build from the deserts and swamps of Palestine 'a new
Jewish country—a cooperative state where a Jew, a worker, could live and walk
with his head held up proudly.
The miracle of the Jewish State is toUnded on
the foundation of the Histadrut_ structure de--
Veloped by *those yOuthfUl:HalUtzirn. On May . 14,
1948, the British gOvernifieiiit-:iiiilled out of Pal-
estine leaving all of its Utilities and public offices
presumably in chaos. Yet the very next day the
leaders of Israel., with the experienced manpoWer
and leadership of the Histadrut and the many
vital Hista.drut institutions placed at their dis-
posal, were prepared to take over.
The planning and the spirit of those youths
of 1920 were paying off; the state *which they had
created within the walls of British policy emerged.
It is withthe same zest and spirit for a better
form of Jewish life that the \American youth has
responded to the needs of the .Histadrut. In De-
troit, as in all cities of the United States, leader-
ship and direction of Histadrut Campaigning and
education have been in great measure entrusted to
youth.
Youths' unfailing efforts have resulted in the
growth of the Histadrut support by leaps and
bounds. Their zeal in carrying the message of the
Histadrut and the Labor Zionist movement to all
P of the United States has made-it a force of
which its counter-parts in Israel are proud.

My, answer is: The ten million

is of very great importance, it •
is necessary help of great sig-
nificance to the whole of the

consider it a competitive cam-
