The officers of the United
Jewish Appeal announce that a
three-day national conference
will be held . in Atlantic City
beginning Wednesday, Jan. 12,
to plan the 1949 campaign of the
United Jewish Appeal for mass
settlement and upbuilding in
Israel, for relief and rehabilita-
tion in Europe, North Africa and
other areas, and for refugee ad-
justment in the United States.
All sessions of the conference
will be held at the Chelsea Hotel.
The Atlantic City meeting will
set up a unified fund - raising
program for 1949 for the United
Palestine Appeal, the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee and the
United Service for New Ameri-
cans, according to the joint state-
ment that was issued by William
Rosenwald, Herman L. Weisman
and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, na-
tional chairmen of the United
Jewish Appeal.
The national conference will
also observe the 10th anniversary
of the establishment of the
United Jewish Appeal as tne
combined campaign t h r o u g h
which American Jews have
"achieved a decade of dedicated
service" in the tasks of savi*.g
and rebuilding the lives of the
surviving victirns of persecution
and war in Europe. –
The principal subjects for con-

sideration at the conference will
be:
1. The emptying of the Jewish
DP camps in Europe. With most
of the Jewish DPs in Italy al-
ready transferred to Israel, and
the Jewish DP population in
Austria greatly reduced, the
major emphasis Will be on the
American-occupied zone of Ger-
many, where nearly 100,000 dis-
placed Jews still remain.
2. The immigration to and ab-
sorption in Israel in 1949 of more
than 150,000 Jews from the DP
centers and other parts of Eu-
rope and North Africa.
3. In connection with immi-
gration into Israel, which is ex-
pected to be maintained at the
rate of 15,000 monthly, it was
disclosed that the UPA is map-
ping out a huge housing program
to shelter the newcomers in 1949
and the many thousands of 1948
arrivals who are still without
permanent dwellings.
4. A major problem facing the
United Jewish Appeal agencies
in 1949 is the - situation of more
than 1,000,000 Jews in North
Africa and Moslem countries.
5. The UJA conference will
study JDC plans for eXpanding
its reconstruction program in
Eastern and Western Europe.
6. Program of aid to refugees
reaching the United States.
