Behind the Curtain
Informed people were not surprised when the British delegate.
to the UN, Harold Beeley, warned Britain would take military
action against Israel in the event its forces penetrated into Trans-
jordan . . . When King Abdullah announced recently his intention
of becoming also king of Palestine, London immediately announced
a mutual anti-aggression pact with the gentleman who was the
major aggressor against the UN . .. Nor was Beeley's impudent lie
about an Israeli incursion into Transjordan unexpected . . Mr.
Beeley is an old master at the Arab game . . . He was the architect
of the Arab League .. . If there was any doubt that Israel would
be the sole democracy in the Middle East, that doubt has been dis-
sipated by the publication of its proposed constitution . . . The
Koestlers and the so-called radcials who have been raving about
the danger of clericalism in the new state must be covering their
faces ... When Ambassador Douglas recently returned from London
he held a conference with President Truman on the Palestine issue
. . He tried to sway the President from his announced Palestine
course on the Bernadotte rplan . . . Mr. Truman was firm . . . In the
end he pulled his trump card . . . He told Truman there had been
"a gentlemen's agreement" with the British that the U. S. would
support the Bernadotte scheme . . . The President was reported to
have replied he was too much of a gentleman's to become a party to
such an agreement .. . Bevin hasn't said it yet publicly, but it is
no longer a secret that that discredited Laborite has revived his
libel about communism dominating the Jewish state . . . The recent
stories about Israel purchasing arms from pro-Soviet countries were
intended to smear Israel with communism.
Israel Laughs
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first President, recently held a
press conference at Rehovoth . One of the foreign correspondents
asked Weizmann whether there were any prospects for an early
Israeli-Arab settlement . . . When the veteran Zionist replied that
the question was rather difficult to answer, the correspondent asked"
him whether he had read a recent statement on the subject by the
Arab League . .. Quick as a flash Weizmann replied: "My father,
may he rest in peace, taught me that only an analphabet can read
a letter from an analphabet."
Circulating in -Israel is a story about a recent meeting of the
government council . . The problem arose whether the new state
sh ould follow the orientation of the eastern or western bloc . . . The
only left-wing member of the body urged that Israel follow the
pro-Soviet bloc • . . When the debate reached a sharp point one of
the Mizrachi representatives said: "I have a suggestion to make. In
the synagogue we will orientate ourselves toward the east and in
politics toward the west."
Some years back two Polish Jews, Zalmen and Chaim Yeru
shalmi settled in Palestine and later became rick textile merchants
. . One day Chaim Yerushalmi sat in a Tel Aviv cafe discussing
politics with a very poor Jew whose acquaintance he had just made
. • . The poor Jew asked Yerushalmi what he would do if Jerusalem
were internationalized, whether he would remain a - Tel Avivite or
become a Yerushalmi . . . The rich man answered he would remain
in Tel Aviv . . . The poor Jew looked at him for a moment and
replied: "As for me, I would rather be a Yerushalmi."
