Histadrut Gets • Initial. Gifts of
$40,000; Plan Rally for Jan. 9

Pre-campaign gifts to the 1949
Detroit Israel Histadrut Cam-
paign. for $375,000, which form-
ally opens in Music Hall on Sun-
day evening, Jan. 9, already ex-
ceed $40,000, it was announced
by John Isaacs, campaign trea-
surer. The sum represents the
efforts of the furniture division
under leadership o f Nathan
Shecter, contributions announced
at the luncheon meeting address-
ed by Captain Yaakov Wayland
and solicitations of individual
workers.
Calling for intensi4d solicita-
tion and increased contributions,
Isaacs revealed receipt of an
emergency cable from the Israel
Histadrut which states that of
the 25,000 newcomers expected
in Israel in December, a major-
ity will be employed through

that the world famous cantor,
Mihail Kusevitsky, will be the
guest artist.

Yehudith Ginsburg, - special
Israeli guest speaker, a member
of the Military Council of Jeru-
salem, is one of the leading
nurses in Israel and is in charge
of mobilizing nurses for the vast-
ly increased medical services re-
quired by the incoming soldiers
of the Israeli Army. Mrs. Gins-
burg has been active in public
life in the Jewish State since
her arrival in 1926 and has
participated in several Interna-
tional Nurses Congresses as a
Jewish representative. She • is
the only woman member of the
special Histadrut delegation _ to
the United States.
Serving with Mr. Schaver in
planning the Jan. 9 event are
Harry Schumer, Norman Drach-
ler, Louis Levine and Morris
Lieberman.

The meeting will be in the form
of a dessert luncheon.
Rev. Joseph Q. Mayne of the
Detroit Round Table of Catholics,
Protestants and Jews will address
the members of ORT North at
19457 Suffolk, at 12:30 p.m., Mon-
day, Dec. 20.
Mrs. Clarence Enggass will in-
troduce the speaker, who will tell
of his experiences in Europe this
summer at the National Con-
ference of Christians and Jews.

on the guardianship project.

Israel Census Result

The first overall results of the
census held on the 8th of Octo-
ber . show that the population of
the State of Israel at present con-
sists of 713,000. Jews and 69,000
others. It is -expected that as a
result of large-scale immigration
the n,urnber of Jews in the State
by the end of 1948 will top the
760,000 mark.
