Emma Schaver Achieves ew
Popularity on Tour of Israel

Emma Scheyer, poplar Detroit soprano who already has gained
fame as a concert singer Throughout the United States and Canada,
in Israel, in Poland, in several Latin American countries, in France,
England and Belgium, is adding to her popularity during her present
tour of Israel where she has appeared in more than 25 concerts.
By the time she completes her tour of the State of Israel, it is believed
that more than 150,000 people will have heard her in army camps,
colonies and cities, in solo concerts as well as with the Israel Symphony
directed by Leonard Bernstein. Her husband, Morris L. Scheyer,
prominent, Detroit labor - Zionist leader, returned from Israel three
weeks ago, having spent seven weeks there with his wife, on her
concert tours, visiting the battlefronts, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other
centers. The Schavers participated in laying the foundation of the
library at Bet Bed, the diplomatic center being established in memory
of Berl Katznelson near Tel Aviv. The library will involve a cost of
more than $100,000 and will represent the augmented fund given
by Mr. Scheyer to Israel on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

The photographs show the Schavers at Ephal, one of The settle-
ments they visited. Above, Mrs. Schaver is being greeted by a
group of Ephal children. The lower right photo shows the "Bruchim
Habo-im" i:"blessed be the arrivals") sign in their honor at the entrance
to the colony. In the photo on the lower left the Schavers are
being shown at a spot where Arabs were repulsed by Israeli forces.
The following article by an eminent journalist, Isaac Rimon, who writes
for Jewish newspapers in nine countries, describes Mrs. Shaver's
visit in Israel:

Schaver sang at Degania, in the
heroic__ Jordan valley. The settle-
ments of the Jordan valley have
written a truly heroic chapter
during the weeks of bloody
battles against the invaders. The
enemy penetrated to the very
heart of Degania, but the soldiers
and members of Kibbutzim and
their wives and children fought
like lions to drive out the enemy.
First Concert for Soldiers
Emma Schaver saved her first
performance in Israel for these
fighters. Thousands of soldiers
and the inhabitants of Degania B,
Shaar Hagolan, Masada, Ashdot
Yaakov, and even from EM Gev
came to Degania A for the con-
cert which was converted into a
great holiday leaving an impres-
sion that will long be remem-
bered.
On the 18th of Elul, Ein Harod
observes the anniversary of its
settlement on the land. Every
year a huge celebration is ar-
ranged and this year, Emma
Schaver was invited to render
her beautiful songs. She left a
powerful impression on her
listeners.
Emma travels around among
the Jewish settlements and vil-
lages and especially among the
military camps in the land, bring-
ing a spiritual treat. One evening,
during a brief pause after a per-
formance "somewhere" under the
open skies for thousands of
soldiers and before a visit to our
heroic troops in the ‘ Negev, the
singer gave a concert in the
great Habima theater in Tel-Aviv.
A select audience attended:
ministers of the Israeli govern-
ment, leaders in the theater and
arts, writers, journalists, commu-
nal figures packed the auditorium.
And this select audience of
reserved aesthetics and skeptics
was overwhelmed and inspired
by Emma's singing. The walls
echoed for many minutes with
the applause given to the singer
who was not allowed to leave the
stage. Emma Schaver's appear-
ance at the Habima was trans-
formed into a great event in the
Tel Aviv musical and artistic
world.
Leaders Attend Reception
Immediately after the Habima
concert, an intimate reception
was arranged for Emma. Among
the speakers were Marie Syrkin,
Menasha Rovina, the well-known
music critic, Joseph Baratz, and
Dr. A. S. Yuris who had just
returned from an eight month
tour in Europe as the "flying
cultural ambassador" of the
Histadrut. Dr. Yuris stated: "The
song of the Vilna partisans made
the strongest impression on me.
A. Jew at my age really feels
young when it is sung the way
Emma sang it.
The deep sentiment and recog-
nition of the Israelis was ex-
pressed at a reception tendered
by the Histadrut executive in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Schaver.

TEL AVIV —

The free State of Israel has had a welcome
and distinguished guest for several weeks the famous Amer-
can Jewish folk-singer, Emma Schaver, who has come with
her husband, Morris, a prominent Zionist leader in America
and great friend of labor in Israel. They have come on the
invitation of the cultural department of Histadrut and are its

official guests.
The singer is not a newcomer
in Israel. She was here in 1942
and in 1945. But since those clays
a new generation has risen which
probably does not remember the
Emma Schauer of the earlier
period. The newspapers noted her
arrival this time as a famous
American singer who was also
beloved and popular in Latin
America and had just completed
a highly successful tour of DP
camps. However, the papers
adopted a policy of "Let's wait
and hear"—then they would
know the truth.
'Sacred Mission'
"I have come on a sacred mis-
sion," Mrs. Schaver told this
reporter at our first meeting. "I

Harry Berlin Reelecfed
Aesculapian President

have come to sing for our heroic
soldiers, for the conquerors and
liberators of a. Jewish homeland."
The very next day, Emma
