Jewish Book Month, three liter-
ary evenings are planned this
week by member organizations of
the Jewish Young Adult Council.
Rabbi Sidney Akselrad of
Temple Beth El will review

sored by Chapter One of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit
at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7.
Wednesday evening, Dec. 8,
Sigma Theta Delta sorority of
Wayne University will present
Norman Drachler, assistant princ-
ipal of Roosevelt elementary
schOol, reviewing Maurice Sam-
uels' "World of Sholom Alech-
em."
Dorothy Hagberg, head of the
foreign language department of
the Detroit Public Library will
review Samuel's "Prince of the
Ghetto" at 8:30 p.m. Thursday,
Dec. 9., when Helene Penfiil

men sponsors the book review
session.
All three meetings will be in
Butzel Hall of the Jewish Center.

Adult Council-sponsored celebra-
tion of Jewish book month, books
of Jewish interest or content may

Congress Youth to See
Play on Discrimination

"Ours Is The Task," a stirring
play on discrimination, will be
enacted at the meeting of the
Youth Division of the American
Jewish Congress at the Jewish
Center, at 7:30 p. m. Wednesday,
Dec. 8.
The play, written by Mrs.
Harry Landsman, is to be pre-
sented by the Congress Women's
Division, under the direction of
Mrs. Walter Frank.
An open discussion and re-

Services for Youth
Begin at Northwest

A series of Sabbath eve serv-
ices especially for young people
will be inaugurated this Friday
at the Northwest Synagogue by
the Young People's Club of the
Northwest Hebrew Congregation.
Herman Rosens will serve as
cantor for the first service, with
Hal Shapiro acting as rabbi. A
choir will assist in chanting the
services.
All young people are invited to

Twenty-five years ago a small
group of Jewish women organ-
ized themselves into the North-
western Women's League, whose
purpose was to provide trans-
portation for pupils of the Phila-
delphia-Byron Hebrew School.
Next Tuesday evening, at a
dinner at the Shaarey Zedek, the
outgrowth of that group, the
Women's Auxiliary of the United
Hebrew schools, an active serv-
ice and cultural organization,
will celebrate its 25th anniver-
sary.
Mrs. Herman Lippitt was first
president of the women's group
which, in 1924, began its program
of purchasing buses and provid-
ing drivers to insure the children
safe transportation from their
homes, or public schools, to their
Hebrew classes.
In 19.25, when Mrs. Sarah Kap-
lan became president, the group's
activities began to expand.
Through the years, its program
has broadened to include month-
