Ambijan Committee Endows Israel Center NEW YORK - The American Committee, of which Dr. Albert Einstein is honorary president, announces that its national ad- ministrative committee has voted to support the bookbinding work- shop in the training center of the Haifa Home for refugee girls of the Women's League for Pal- estine. This is the first time that the Ambijan Committee, which is de- voting all its efforts to facilitate the settlement of Jews from the war-ravaged areas of the USSR in the Autonomous Jewish Re- gion of Birobidjan, will actively participate in a constructive re- habilitation action in Israel. In accepting the financial as- sistance from the Ambijan Com- N mittee, Mrs. William Prince, President, and Mrs. David L. Isaacs, Chairman of the Palestine Committee of the Women's Lea- gue for Palestine, issued a state- ment in which they expressed the hope that the cooperation be- tween the Ambijan Committee and the Women's League for Palestine "will mark a significant advance in world Jewish unity in behalf of constructive action for the State of Israel." Four Authors Win LaMed Fund Prizes NEW YORK, (JTA) -F o ur prizes of $400 each for the best books in Yiddish and Hebrew published in the United States during 1947 were won by two Yiddish and tiArb Hebrew writers. The prizes are 'awarded annual- ly by the Louis LaMed Fund which seeks to promote literary standards among Jews. in the United States. The jury was composed of H. Leivick, Kadie Molodowsky and Dr. Aaron Steinberg. The Yiddish winners are: Aaron Glanz-Loveless, for his book of poems, "A Jew at Sea," and David Opatoshu, for a book of short stories, "Between Sea and Desert." Pamphlet by Non-Jew Urges Defense of Jewish People In a pamphlet "Why Defend the Jews?" published by the William-Frederick Press, 315 W. 35th St., New York 1, Jan Foard tells how she began life with prejudice against Jews but learned through association to abandon her biased views and to launch upon - a policy of de- fending • them. She expresses gratitude that she -has been ac- cepted by Jews and declares: ,._ When we first met and had only started to know each other, they had so little to work with. I was such a sanctimonious, ig- norant, bigoted little snob-and norant, they were so tolerant." " Classified Advertisements AFL Criticizes' Immigration Law CINCINNATI (JTA)-The cur- rent immigration law which authorizes the admission of 205,- 000 displaced persons to the United States within two years was criticized by the. American Federation of Labor executive council in its report submitted to the 67th convention of the organ- ization. The report points out that "the law contains many discriminatory provisions which, in their effect, if not in each case by design, impose the most rigorous limita- tions upon certain groups of de- serving displaced persons." The council recommended that the American Federation of Labor support the request for amending the DP immigration law, at the next session of the Congress, so as "to rectify the injustices" which were embodied in it. Specifically, the convention was asked by the council to press for changing of the cut-off date in the law's definition of displaced persons from Dec. 22, 1945 to April 21, 1947 and removal of the special priority for persons engaged in agricultural pursuits. The council also asked for sup- port of an amendment providing for the admission, during a four- year period of 402,000 eligible displaced persons, and for the ex- tension of the term of office of members of the Displaced Per- sons Commission to June 30, 1953. PARIS (JTA)-The Joint Dis- tribution Committee - sponsored international conference on relief and rehabilitation heard Lewis Neikrug, of HIAS, voice a de- mand for immediate action to "rectify the injustice of the pres- ent American DP immigration law."
