Battle for- Israel's Freedom Continues!

As =we approach the date of Nov. 29, the first anniversary of the historic United Nations
partition decision; it becomes necessary again to warn the People Israel that the State of Israel
is not altogether secure and that the defenders of the rights of homeless Jews to statehood must
not lull themselves. into a. state of unjustifiable confidence over the future.
While we repeat in the right-hand ear of this page the prophetic assurance that "Nezakh
Israel lo Yeshaker"—"the eternity of Israel shall not be betrayed"—we are compelled to warn our
readers that the same forces which have been angling for Israel's destruction, under the leadership
of a British-Arab alliance; stilt are at work ready to devour the infant state.

Israel would have been stillborn if the British and the Arabs had their way and if the hopes
-
of the antagonistic members of the U. S. State Department had materialized. But Israel had no
Other alternative but to fight for life and_ liberty. The Jewish warriors fought with whatever
weapons-they could gather. They built up an army, navy and air force that has defied seven
states. The Jewish population of less than 700,000 was able to withstand the onslaught of
40,000,000 Arabs—people who, in the main, were misled by their effendi rulers who are anxious
iO perpetuate their medieval feudalism upon oppressed and starving masses of people.

The Middle East was very near to peace When- Jews and. Arabs met to plan an amicable
solution of the Palestinian problem. Abortive UN orders ended the peace talks.:

But we are not without friends. Whereever there are libertarians, Israel gets encourage-
ment. In every freedom-loving heart there is hope that Israel will not be thwarted in the battle
for justice. W. K. Kelsey ; brilliant commentator of the Detroit News, gave evidence of it in
his - column on Nov. 17 when he stated, under the heading "What Is Egypt Doing in Palestine?"

ISRAEL HAS AT LEAST ONE conclusive reason for rejecting any order
of the-UN Security Council to withdraw from the Negeb to positions held in October.
reported, has accepted the order.
Egypt;
.The conclusive reason is that while the Israeli have a claini to the Negeb,
which was awarded them under several of the -various partition plans, Egypt has
no right-whatsoever to the occupation of any part of Palestine. The order issued
by Dr. Bunche, -UN mediator, would not only confirm - the presence of Egyptian
troops in the coastal 'region of Palestine, but would move them inland to positions
from which the Israeli have recently.ousted them.
WHAT ARE THE EGYPTIANS DOING in Palestine? Who invited them
there? Certainly not the Security Council: Then why are they tolerated? Why are
they not told to get out and stay out?
The latter is a rhetorical question. Everyone who has followed the course
of events in the Palestine• controversy knows why. It is beeause Egypt has the
backing of Great Britain, who is moving heaven and earth - to secure for her
beloved Arab states, through the UN, what she was not able to gain by force and
chicane as Palestine's trustee.
The game now is to put -Israel in a bad light by ordering her to do things
she will not do—and the Security Council knows she will not- dO them—and then
decide in favor of the British pets. The Cominentator, for one, believes it will
not work.

PARIS.—Israel's acceptance of the United Nations' Se-
curity Council request for evacuation of troops from the
Negev—with the warning that the Negev will not be aban-
doned by the Jewish State—and the declaration of U. S.
Delegate Dr. Philip C. Jessup that Israel will not be deprived
of territory without the new state's consent, points to speedy
implementation of the UN partition decision of Nov. 29, 1947.
It is daily becoming more evident that the Bernadotte plan
is doomed to oblivion and that Israel will be asked to give
up a small slice of the Negev in exchange for the conquered
- territory in Galilee.
Discussion on issues affecting Israel continued on Mon-

day. Speaking before the UN Political Committee, Lester
Pearson of Canada said that the JeWish,coMmunity "cannot
have it both ways: it can not have all-the territory given it
in the Nov. 29 resolution toge'ther with all additional terri-
tory Which_ it has been able to take .by force of arms." He
:joined with Dr. Jessup in suggeSting international recogni-
tion for Israel- if the Jewish State moderates its demands.
Israel can not be asked . to "enter into nego-
He asserted _
tiations for a settlement unless it is given the right to expect
that the settlernent will mean peace for itself in Palestine."
Russia's delegate SemiOn Tsarapkin demanded imple-
mentation of the partition plan and asserted -that the Berna-
&tte proposal will bring more strife and animosity between
Jews and Arabs and among Arabs themSelves. He suggeSted
that Arabs and'Jews negotiate _directly among thernselves.
PearSon called for a three-point program to be adopted
by the General Assembly j at this session: 1. International
recognition for Israel; 2. Appointment of a commission to
assist Jews . and Arabs in working out a final solution on the
basis of the partition plan, taking into consideratieri some
of the Bernadotte plan suggestions and the present military
situation; 3. Acceptance of an international regime for
Jerusalem. . _

(Anthoritative sources this week stated that President
Trunian -soon will approve a U. S. loan to-Israel.)
(The Detroit News; in an editorial last Saturday, highly
commended Israel for withdrawing troops from the Negev and
justified Israel's challenge to the_Bernatiotte plan.)
(ReaffirmatiOn of the belief that there are rich oil deposits
in the= Negev, this week . caused a stir throughout the world.)

We place faith in the American spirit as expressed by Mr. kelSey and we retain confidence
that President Truman will fight for the truth, that he will refuse to follow a Britishmade

anti-Israel policy, that Jews will be given an opportunity to _discuss peace terms _ directly with
the Arabs, without interference from British puppets. But in the interim we must be on guard lest
the evil spirits-should make inroads upon the searchers for justice. The battle for justice and lib-
erty goes on! It MUST end in triumph for Israel in order that the security of the Jewish State
may be assured and that the oppressed Arabs eventually may be freed from their effendis.
