Blumenfeld Sees Jewish Education
As New Communal Motivating Force

A new era in Jewish education
was foretold by Dr. Samuel Blu-
menfeld, director of the Chicago
Board of Jewish Education, at a
meeting sponsored by the United
Hebrew Schools Alumni Associa-
tion Nov. 10.
"The Jewish Renaissance in
Palestine has brought about a
re-evaluation of Jewish life, with
a rediscovery of the importance
of Jewish education," Dr. Blu-
menfeld said in his talk, "Educa-
tion for . Our Times." Past gener-
ations lacked -faith in the future
of Judaism and, therefore, failed
to place proper emphasis on a
positive Jewish education for
their children, ne declared.
"The new generation, however,
has a new pride in their Jewish-
ness," the noted educator stated.
He described the use of modern
techniques and instruments of

teaching, such as audio-visual
aids, which bring Judaism closer
to the child.
Dr_ Blumenfeld explained that
there must be a new motivating
force in Jewish communal life,
to take the place of the urgent
causes of aid to DPS and re-
building of the Jewish homeland.
This new force, he declared,
should be a devout interest in
Jewish education as •the founda-
tion of all Jewish life.
The speaker urged his audience
to carry a message to Jewish
parents, reminding them of their
duty to their dhildren—to pre-
pare them for their life - as
Jews. "Children without a proper
Jewish education learn from non-
Jews the hatreds against the
Jews, without having a positive
knowledge and love of Judaism
as compensation," he said.
In the question period follow-
ing his talk, Dr. Blumenfeld de-
scribed • a rising movement for
unification of Jewish education.
He stressed that this movement
does not• ask simultaneous in-
struction without regard for dif-
ferentiation in religious expres-
sion, but, rather, seeks to con-
solidate, within a community, re-
sources, library facilities and
preparation of properly equipped
faculty for Jewish classes.
Allan L. Weston, president of
the Alumni Association, chaired
the meeting, which wag held in
conjunction with the Hebrew
Schools' 22nd Annual Education
Month: Dr. Alexander W. San-
