Israel Asks Clear Evaluation Of
Peace Objectives in UN's Action

Direct JTA Teletype Wires to The Jewish News

In the Nation's Capital,

PARIS. Israel's representative at the United Nations is w
_ aging a strong fight for a
fair deal for the Jewish State and for a clear evaluation of peace objectives, in the midst - of
one of the most serious •crises that the infant ' nation is faced with at this time.
Adoption by the UN Security Council on Tuesday of a Canadian resolution establis .h#
ing a formal armistice, to replace the present Palestine truce, forced Abba Eban, the Jewish
spokesthan, to oppose various parts of the resolution. He pointed out that, in - effect; The prO-
posal was merely an extension of the-truce which both the mediators and the sponsors of
the resolution agreed had outlived its usefulness. In a request for clarifiCation, he asked
whether laying down demarcation lines meant merely separating Arab and Jewish armies
according to normal war procedures or the creation of A large vacuum proposed in the truce
resolution. He also pointed out that the Canadian armistice_ resolution made no mention
of demilitarized zones.
Eban asked for further clarification of the section which calls for withdrawal and
reduction of forces by both parties. Stating that Israeli forces cannot be expected to with-
draw from Israel, he pointed out that this phase of the resolution could be interpreted as
the withdrawal of outside Arab forces and the reductio -n of Israeli forces. Finally, he asserted
that any such arrangement was by its nature temporary and must provide for a transition to
peace. He therefore suggested that the ultimate
object of peace should be mentioned in the resolu-

ernments, including that of the United States.
Under the able and energetic guidance of Hon-. ,Eliahu Ep-
stein, the special representative of the State of Israel - in the
United StateS, an efficient staff of young men and women, all
adequately trained to handle important problems involving
affairs of state, is engaged in'charting numerous courses of action
involving Israel's- participation in many avenues of international
activities. -
Some of the. tasks undertaken by the Israel Mission may
appear trivial when viewed separately, but judged in their total-
ity they form a huge multi-fashioned pattern which spells
STATEHOOD.
This corres'pondent's first contact with Epstein took place
a little more than three years ago, when we were attached to
the Jewish Agency delegation at San Francisco in the early days
of international planning for the creation of the United Nations.
Epstein had just arrived from Palestine, fortified with experienc-
es that have made him the outstanding authority on Middle East-
ern affairs.
• - "Judged by the - difficulties that faced us three years ago,"
Epstein reminisced, "we have made such great progress that we
are heartened and proud. But we must also look to the future
and ahead of us are problems and obstacles which continue to
demand the combined cooperation of Jews -everywhere in support
and defense of Israel."
