Feature George Givot In Aid Israel Dinner In Detroit on Nov. 21 Our Letter Box Clearing Up the Issue Regarding 'Oliver Twist' Editor, The Jewish News: ; A correspondent writes that he does not agree with this writer's recent objection to a British film version of Dickens' "Oliver Twist" which was referred to as "a vehicle of blatant anti- Semitism" because it depicts Fagin as a false caricature of the Jew.. Our correspondent suggests that if we are to reject "Oliver Twist" because' the character of Fagin "puts a blight upon all _Jews" we may as well "rid our- selves of William Shakespeare because his "Macbeth" makes a villain of every Scot." Apart from the fa-Ct that "Mac"- beth" exalts Scotch character in the persons of Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff, there is a very great difference between - Shakes- peare's "Macbeth" and the por- . trayal of Fagin in the motion picture under discussion. And this must be taken into consid- eration in the light of the cir- cumstances under which we live today. For, prejudice against the Scotch is not being used as a political weapon for the estab- lishment in power of an un- American, subversive movement known as Nazi-fascism. But, prejudice against Jews is being used for just such a purpose. And the method employed for stirring up hatred against Jews, in order to prepare the ground- work for the future success of this subversive movement, is to present the Jew as a reprehensi- ble and altogether undesirable person-•-precisely as this motion picture presents Fagin. This is the method which Hit- ler, Goebbels, .and„Streicher em- ployed preparatory to the tri- umph of Nazism. By holding up the Jew to the German people in exactly the same terms as this motion picture would hold up the Jew, in the person of Fagin, to the American, people, the Nazis were able to get the support they sought on -the. _basis of anti- Semitism. Since we know that this kind of anti-Semitic propaganda is the prelude to the bitterest kind of hatred and the worst kind of per- secution of a people, we must make every effort to prevent the spread of it in our country. We cannot see what good it does to talk about the evils of anti-Semitism and to say over and over again that it is a trick used to divide and weaken Amer- ica and to destroy our liberty and free institutions—if we do nothing to oppose the propaganda itself which finally brings all of these dire consequences to pass. We should say the same thing about the presentation of "Mac- beth" if it could be used to arouse hatred of the Scotch and as a po- litical weapon for entrenching a subversive movement. The facts are, of course, that nothing of • the sort has ever been attempted in this country, or is being at- tempted today, where the Scotch are coticerned. The American people, unaccus-. tomed to the evil ways in which subversive propaganda can be used, even • unaware sometimes of its presence in the things*they see and read, must be constantly alerted regarding it. We must learn to reject every suggestion, however subtly offer- ed, or in whatever form it may appear, which invite's us, as Nazi- fascist propaganda does, • to be prejudiced against and hate the people of a.-race or religion and, as Communist propaganda does, to scorn or detest the people of a class. It may ngt always be easy to overcome the influence of sub- versive propaganda, but it must be done for the , sake of keeping America united, strong, and free. Whoever yolk are wherever you may be—in your church, community, office, factory, and home—dd your part to 4 keep America united—to keep America free of divisive prejudice. It is your patriotic duty. REV.' WILLIAM C. KERNAN, Director, Institute for Ameri- can Democracy, Inc., 369 Lexington Ave., New York 17, N. Y. Legion Officer Clarifies Service Reburials Editor, The Jewish News: The city of Detroit Past ap- proximately 200 young Jews in World War II. Many of these war heroes have been returned and are now at rest in Jewish ceme- teries here. •The Rosenwald Post of the American Legion has been instrumental in arranging serv- ices for reinterment. When the United States 1 gov- ernment sanctioned the return of war dead, there were many who thought that it would open up the old war wound. As officer in charge of reburial arrange- ments for the Rosenwald Post in this community, I feel justified in stating that this has been proven far from the truth. Manz. of the returns have' been re- quested by the parents and some by wives. The services, which are dig- nified and semi-military, are bringing home to the loved ones the realization that the sons who gave their lives for their coun- try, would rather have their mothers feel emotional inside than show it in public. It's true that there's nothing to be seen except the• casket draped with the American flag, yet there is something majestic at the serv- ices of a returned war hero. For the Gold Star mothers, may I say that they have shown courage and composure during the trying services, and God grant that they shall have that feeling only a mother can have when they visit the last resting place of their war hero sons here at home.
