Washington Rumors

President Truman will take a firmer hand in the Palestine ques-
tion . • . Now that he is President in his own righ,t he will, dictate
rather than follow policy . .. His diPective to Marshall a week ago,
when the Security Council was considering the British-Chinese
sanction proposal, was clear. . . . There was nothing in it to warrant
the interpretation that the U. S. delegation was free to re-reverse
itself on the day after the election ... Despite all denials Mrs. Roose-
velt and other Americans in Paris are bitter over Marshall's backing
of the Bevin-sponsored and inspired sanction move . . . The sanction
subterfuge is not Bevin's last card. . .. His open admission that Brit-
ish Army regulars were still serving with Transj ordan forces tipped
his cards. . . . From a source close to the White House we hear that
Mr. Truman plans a conference with Zionist leaders in the United
States . . . Emerging from the conference will be a clear, firm and
unalterable. policy . . . Close friends of the President say he believes
in th possibility of a direct Jewish-Arab settlement . . . One Wash-
ington source believes Mr. Truman may make a bold move soon . . .
The plan calls for the Prpsiderit to give de jure recognition to Israel
and then invite the Arab states to a round-table conference with
Israel . . . If the Arabs reject his proposal he will use some of the
strong language he showed himself Capable of delivering during his
- effective campaign.
