MAURICE SMILAY of 925
Whitmore was "all expenses paid
for two" contestant, last week, on
"Break The Bank" radio show
in New York ... When the phone
rang at home, daughter Helen an-
swered the request to come and
compete . . but it was daddy
who did a fine job . . . while he
lasted . . . and went home with
$300 prize money.

THE GOLFING SEASON is at
its end insofar as the local cit-
izenry is concerned . . but
Julius Magy still has this story
to tell while putting his clubs
away .. . Took place at Rackham
while playing with a foursome
. . . Relaxing at the 19th hole,
one of the fellows asked Bill
Gruber, who is quite a man on
the green, "What do you think
of my game?" . . . Bill shrugged
and replied, "Oh, I suppose it's
all right, but I still prefer golf."

tion contributed by his readers

BILL ZOLKOWER didn't let a
little thing like not having any
nails, last week, interfere with
his putting up direction signs to
Social, Inc.'s, affair in Inkster .. .
The popular lad just dug into his
bag of ingenuity . . . borrowed
the gum being chewed on by
Beverly Charlip . .. and let that
do the trick . .. which it did!
SPEAKING OF Social, Inc. . . .
folks who've been asking to get
in on the planning end of affairs
will be interested to know that
openings have been made for
committees to work with the
board of directors . .. Call Shir-
ley Dubrinsky, Sec., at UN.

WALKING ALONG the shores
of Tel Aviv, thinking of home,
must have caused Jimmy Kane's
mind to play funny tricks on him
• . . or so it seemed . . . but the
person he saw and _looked twice
at to make sure, wasn't any opti-
cal illusion . . . it was actually
his brother Ed!
WHAT WAS ED doing there?
, . . same thing Jimmy was . . .
serving with the Israeli Army.
▪ . Both boys have returned .. .
but the fact that they had met
each other so many many miles
away from home still lingers as
a head-shaking memory ... They
also talk of Eddie not recogniz-
ing Jim . . who had been in
Israel months before his brother's
arrival . . . and sported a mus-
tache and beard.
THE ISRAELI Air Force is
shaping up into a great bit of
fighting machinery," says Jim-
my, who was assistant to the
chief of air operations . "We've
now got about 18 squadrons and
let me tell you they've been do-
ing plenty of damage. For a
while, we were tossing hand-
grenades out of the planes . . .
but when the supply grew, we'd
line up 20 bombs on the floor of
a twin-motored Haviland (an
English plane) . . . one fellow
would pull the pins and another
would throw them out the door
• . Boy, did those Arabs run!"

BIG FESTIVITIES, last week,
at Northwest Hebrew Congrega-
tion was "Sports Night" put on
by Men's Club . . - . with the
youngsters outshining the elders
when it came to off-the-floor
questions hurled at the baseball,
football and bowling figures . . .
Sportcaster Al Nagler had to ask
the kids to give the older folks a
chance to get- in on the ques-
tioning . . . "Joe" Ginsberg, Ted
Gray and Bill Pierce were there
from the Detroit Tigers ... Mery
Pregulman, Clyde LeForce and
.Fred Enke from the Lions . . .
and George "36 perfect games"
Young from the E&B bowling
squad.

DISA N' DATA . . . Thanks to
Harold Baskin, we've got one of
those new-fangled tie clasps that
look and work like a cross-the-
door kitchen latch .. . Harold is
a distributor for the Irving
Brandt men's furnishings line .. .
"Stunt Night" the annual event
where the AZA kids let loose
with all their talents . . . will be
held Nov. 13 . . . Winner, last
year, was Seymour Sobole No.
661 group, with Harry Keidan No.
383 in second place.

IT WAS EXPECTED that there
would be people who wouldn't
cooperate in the SOS Drive, last
week . . . but it still left a sour
taste with those who volunteered
in the great effort to hear such
expressions as "Come back later"
and "I haven't any time to both-
er" . . . but the one that really
took the cake was when a woman
left her empty bag outside the
door . . . with a note attached to
it, "Sorry, but I haven't been
home all day!"
