Hebrew Education Month Cantata
Emphasizes Heritage of Israel

A cantata—"From Lullaby to
Lullaby"—broadcast last Sunday
morning over Station WWJ, on
the occasion of the current ob-
servance of 22nd Annual Educa-
tion Month of the United Hebrew
Schools, • had for its theme the
heritage of Israel and its con-
tinuity from generation to gener-
ation. It was written and con-
ducted by Shirley Subar Sklash.
The participants included the
following members of the staff
of the United Hebrew School:
Mrs. Ilse Roberg, Mrs.. Leah Ko-
ven, Leah Michlin, Drorg Selesny,
Abraham Schachter, Hugo Apt,
Irving Ritter and Leon Gura.
The child who sang the Bar
Mitzvah brochoth was Sonia
Plush-nick.
The nalTator was Bob Leslie,
WWJ staff announcer.
The concluding remarks were
ina.de by Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich,
chairman of the 22nd Annual
Education Month. She said in
part:
"This cantata reminds us that
we are not only descendants but
also ancestors. As such, we must
preserve and enrich our heritage
dare not dissipate it. If
these centuries of suffering and
struggle and creativity shall not

have been in vain, then that child
in his cradle lays upon us, his
parents, the sacred obligation to
teach him the beauty and the
significance of that heritage, to
give him pride in it, inner re-
serves and peace of mind. A feel-
ing of belonging, which comes
from knowledge and understand-
ing of himself, his background,
his people. This is our solemn
obligation to him to give him the
key that unlocks the door of
Israel's most precious treasure
house — the Book. Everything
else, material things, he may lose,
but that which he is taught, the
dignity and the culture and the
glory that was his people's, that
will be and strengthen him
and be -his legacy to his children
and his children's children.
"This is Jewish Education
Month, and our splendid system
of the United Hebrew Schools
beckons, not only this month, but
every month to every Jewish
child and whispers gently, but
passionately—this is our heritage,
claim it, enrich it, love it, and
become an ancestor of whom your
descendants will say, as you may
say of your own parents—they
lighted the way for me, 'they
'were a lamp unto my feet'."
