Voices of Bigotry

Bigotry is far from squelched in this coun-
try. Anti-Semites are utilizing every oppor-
tunity to attack the Jews of America. Issues
revolving around the situation in Israel have
been called into play by bigots and in some
quarters Jews are used as scapegoats in politi-
cal campaigns.
Friends of Democracy's Battle, in its cur-
rent issue, reveals that Salem Bader, a pro-
Arab propagandist, is active in California. In
an address to 1,000 people in Los Angeles, he
characterized Zionism as a "world conspi-
racy." At his meeting, a pamphlet, "Jewish
Atrocities in the Holy Land," issued by the
Arab Higher Committee for Palestine, was
placed on sale as part of the organized effort
to malign Jewry.
William H. (Alfalfa Bill) Murray, former
Governor of Oklahoma, is another proponent
of race issues. In his book, "The Negro's Place
in Call - of the Race," he not only attacks the
Negroes but also revives his anti-Semitic ti-
rade by citing the famous forgeries, "The
Protocols of the Elders of Zion," as "proof"
that Jews are responsible for Communism
and are seeking world control. Hitler's theo-
ries are declared by Murray to be "sound"
and he endorses the activities of such anti-
Semites as G. L. K. Smith, Elizabeth Dilling
and Jeremiah Stokes. Murray's contention is
that Communists and Jews are out to "mon-
grelize" the white race, that mongrelization"
must be prevented at all costs and that
Negroes and Jews must be kept out of "policy
framing" posts in the Federal Government.

Meanwhile Melford Pearson of Nobles-
ville, Ind., has launched a movement to free
William Dudley Pelley, fuehrer of the White
Shirts who is serving a 15-year jail sentence
for sedition.

Thus, the bigots are at work mobilizing
their forces against the natural scapegoats—
Jews and Negroes.

L. M. Birkhead, director of Friends of
Democracy, writing in his organization's bul-
letin in opposition to Communism, makes
this very important point:

"The real test of intelligent opposition
to Communism is whether one is also op-
posed to Communism; so was the Ger-
man-American Bund and so is the Ku
Klux Klan.

"Being opposed to Communism is not
enough. Enlightened Americans are op-
posed to Communism of course. But they
also are opposed to anti-Semitism, anti-
Negroism, super-nationalism, and all of
the other ideas held by the extreme
Right."

Fortunately, both major candidates for
the Presidency are agreed on these points. But
there are too many men and women who
have not yet grasped the full significance of
total freedom as embodied in our Constitu-
tion and as it was rooted iri the foundations
of our democracy by the Fathers of this Re-
public. These people must be taught basic
principles of justice, and they must be fought
every time their ideas are propagated before
American audiences. The battle for liberty
never ends. It begins anew every time some
one loses his balance and begins to attack one
or more portions of the population.

Thrilling Account of Man
Who Gained Wide Fame

"The gay and hearty story of an outstanding
American through more than seventy vivid,
action-packed years . . ."
This is the sub-title of "The Autobiography of
Sol Bloom," eminent Democratic leader, Member
of Congress, showman, historian, son of an im-
migrant who "made good" and rose to the top of
the ladder.
This book, published by G. P. Putnam's Sons
(2 W. 45th St., New York), is a thrilling account
of the life of a man who, faced with economic
difficulties, took advantage of the opportunities
offered by America and in turn made very great
contributions to his country.
Always the showman, he knew the value of
opening his story with a San Francisco setting—
recounting how he spent several
of his early years • in that pic-
turesque city and wound up as
one of the United States delegates
to the historic meetings at which
the foundation was laid for the
United t Nations. Here is the
touching sentiment Sol Bloom
expressed in the opening chapter
on San Francisco with reference
to his presence there as a U. S.
Sol Bloom
delegate to the UN:

Politics and the Israeli Issue

A report to the New York Post from its Chief United
Nations Correspondent in Paris, John Hohenberg, asserts that
"the obvious American attempt to put off any major United
Nations decision on Palestine until after the Presidential elec-
tion cast a deep shadow over the General Assembly's Holy
Land proceedings" and that "apparently the instructions from
President Truman now are to seek no final Palestine solution
until the Nov. 2 election."
These revelations came at a time when Israel was called
upon to refute the damaging attacks made upon the Jewish
State by Dr. Ralph Bunche, acting UN mediator. While the
U. S. State Department has refused to grant recognition to the
former Grand Mufti's "Arab government" and Great Britain
thus far has not answered a similar Arab request for recog-
nition, it is believed that there is an agreement affecting the
Middle East between the United States and the United King-
dom and that a serious effort is being made to frustrate the
Jewish position.
Great Britain remains the chief instigator of anti-Israeli
plots. The British and the Arabs know that Israel is suffer-
ing economically and that time is of essence in the struggle for
survival. The Arab scheme, therefore, is to prolong debate and
to postpone action as long as possible, in order to delay the
possibility of an economic boom in the Jewish State.
The situation is grave. While we can be at ease in the
matter of representation before the UN—Abba Eben, Moshe
Shertok and their associates having demonstrated an ability
to handle the situation properly—the pressure against the
Israeli from many quarters is appalling. Dr. Bunche's charges
are outrageous, in view of the thorough roundup that has
been made of the Sternists in Israel and the subsequent
arrest of the Jewish policemen who failed to prevent the
Sternists' jail break. The "deal" that has been made for the
seating of Egypt as a member nation of the Security Council
involves the eventual admission of Franco Spain into the
UN and therefore carries threats to international peace.
The situation is serious not for Israel alone but for the
entire world and the friends of Israel are called upon to be
on guard against all eventualities.

I

Macchavelhan s Jewish Defense

Shortly after the end of World War II, many Nazis sought
escape from vengeance by posing as Jews. Their cunning
saved many of them from the firing squads and the gallows,
but they made matters difficult for Jews because of the sus-
picion that was aroused, whenever survivors from Hitlerism
sought refuge in Eretz Israel or in lands on the American
continent, that Nazis were posing as Jews.
Now, former Marshal Rodolfo Graziano, Benito Musso-
lini's Minister of Defense in the Fascist Government in North
Italy, is making claim, to an Italian tribunal before whom
he faces the charge of high treason for having collaborated
with the Nazis, that he is of Jewish descent. He made the
plea: "I am a descendant of a certain Baruch of the 12th
century, a Jewish banker who served the Vatican. I have

THE JEWISH NEWS

Sol Bloom the Showman

"And now here I was, about to sit in con-
ference with foreign ministers and ambassadors
speaking a score of tongues. Here I was, pre-
paring to add my voice to those of men like
Halifax of Great Britain, Koo of China, Smuts
of South Africa, Molotov of Soviet Union,
Paul-Boncour of France, Mackenzie King of
Canada, Loudon of the Netherlands, and
Masaryk of Czechoslovakia. Yes, here I was,
commissioned to help write a charter for the
United Nations.
"No ! It couldn't be ! Why, I was nothing but
the child of penniless immigrants who had come
from Poland.
"It was preposterous! I was just an ignorant
runt who had quit school forever after one day
because he lacked money to buy a single book.
"This must all be a dream! I was only the
kid who washed windows and swept floors and
ran errands in a brush factory down there
on Sacramento Street. I was only the little
Jewish boy who peddled violets on Market
Street near Lotta.'s Fomatain."
Then comes the story—of a newsboy, Of a

chap who was given a stand-in job with Belasco
and never lost the urge for the stage, of an insur-
ance man, of struggles and successes, of a great
job accomplished in Congress, of a close friend-
ship with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
of his rise to the great job of chairman of the
Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States
House of Representatives.
One of the great chapters in his life was his
direction of the Washington Bicentennial Celebra-
tion in 1932. In his important positions he met
with and befriended the world's great men. In
reality, his autobiography is a chapter of world
history. It is a very fine book deserving of wide
reading by all ambitious young Americans who
aspire to overcome economic obstacles and who
seek a share in political affairs.
