DPs Must be Taken Out of Camps,
Dingell States in Report on Trip

- "The only solution to the -dis
placed_persons problem is to take
them out of the camps and to
proVide them with the freedom
due to men, women and children
Who have suffered the tortures of
_Nazistril durin.g the war."
This is the :conclusibri that was
reached by Congressman John D.
Dingell during his recent tour of
DP camps in Italy. -
Describing the valiant effort
that Has been made by intergov-
ernmental representatives and
private': agencies • to provide for
the survivors in DP camps, and
praising• the heroism, with which
the DPs are facing their tasks
while awaiting total liberation
from their, present status, Rep.
Dingell said:
"No matter hOW well they may
be clothed and fed•and sheltered,
no matter hoW earnestly they are
given opportunities to acquire an
education, regardless of all the
charitable efforts in their behalf,
as long as these people remain
in camps they are in 'jails, Their
only solution- is their freedom, and
we must' strive to give it to
them."
Congressman Dingell said that
the DPs crave for their freedom.
He emphasized that they do not
all want to go to the United
States, that among the Jewish
DPs many prefer the State of
Israel,' although many also crave
for admission to this country.'
"They want to get out of the
camps, they refuse to be wards
' s and Pauperized people," he said.
- He -related numerous incidents
-in some of the camps and told of
s one man, who is • working in a

kosher kitthen, who evidenced a
passionate hatred for Com-
munism — an attitude shared by
all DPs, many of whom had fled.
from Russian-held territories
and some of whom had lost their
last possessions when Russia be-
came the master Poland.
Rep. Dingell said that "we are
all to blame," that the last session
Of \ Congress' is at sfault for not
haVing adopted a liberal DP law
in accordance with the wishes of
PreSident Truman, and he ex-
pressed the hope that the next
session will amend the mistakes
and will make possible the admis-
sion , of large numbers of • Jews
and others who are presently be-
ing kept out. He said that if re-
turned to Congress he will con-
tinue the efforts he had exerted
in the past in behalf of the DPs
and Israel.
