Al Rosen was recalled in time by the Cleveland Indians to qua- lify for the World Series. It looks as though Rosen may be tried as a first sacker next year. Keltner appears to be a fixture at the -hot corner while Eddie Robinson at first can'be moved out for a hit- ter of Al's stature. Hank. Greenberg, the rumor along the World Series press rows insisted, will be the next owner of the Indians. mpg- . The story goes g that Bill Veeck wants to take over the punch drunk Chicago ;1• White Sox fran- chise and leave the lucrativ Tribe to Green- berg. Hank made quite a few trips for the Indians L Al Rosen during the clos- ing weeks of the season taking over many of Veeck's chores. Hank doesn't have the dough to swing the •purchase of the club but his friends the Marx Bros., toy manufacturers, are willing to back him. Veeck has denied the move but a lot of baseball people say the deal is in the making. Hank wants to make baseball his life's work and is giving. his job with Cleveland his undivided at- tention. Sam Nahem was cast adrift by the Phillies during the last days of the National League cam- paign.' Sam has the stuff to pitch big time ball but is around the 30-year mark and the Phils are loading up with youngsters. If he does not catch on with another major league outfit he probably will return to the Bushwicks next season. Nahem is an attorney and does not depend upon baseball for his full livelihood. * # * Judge Samuel Leibowitz, chair- man of the United Jewish Appeal Junior _ Division, directed the ceremonies at the Polo Grounds when the Israeli and U. S. Olym- pic soccer teams lined up on both sides of him. The famous jurist called upon Mayor Bill O'Dwyer, who addressed the 25,000 fans assembled in the home of the baseball Giants. Uncle Sam's forces were too powerful for the Hebrew lads, submerging the Israeli group 3-1. Capt. Samuel Ben-Dror scored the lone tally for the visitors. Schmuelson, the right back, was removed from the contest with a broken right leg. The boys, re- leased from the fighting lines for this money gathering tour, put up a splendid exhibition and dis- played a better short passing game than the victors. * * * It looks as though the Detroit Tigers are going to have an all Jewish battery next spring. The Tigers have announced the recall of Saul Rogovin to join Myron Ginsberg, who was brought up at the tag end of the current season. Myron's father has a tavern near the Detroit ball park and dishes out free drinks every time his son connects for a safe hit. At the rate young Ginsberg has been going Ginsberg pere is going to run out of brew if he con- tinues to payoff on safe hits. A payoff on homers would be more suitable for the old man, next summer.
