Israel's New Flag

TEL AVIV _(JTA)-7-A spe-
cial committee of experts des.
ignated to recommend an
official Israeli flag announced
that it has decided on the fol-
lowing pattern for the Jewish
state's emblem:
A white background with
two blue strips on both the
right and left sides' and with
the Shield of David in the
center. Superimposed would
be the Israeli -crest: a gray
Hanukah lamp with seven
branches against a blue back-
ground and containing seven
Herzl stars. At the bottom,
right would be a Shofar while
at the bottom left would be
the traditional Esrog (citron)_
and palm branch.
The committee of experts is
headed by Prof. Eliezer Su-
kenik.

Israel Welcomes Most Joyous Sukkoth in History

The traditional Sukkah emerges
stronger than ever as Jewry pre-
pares to celebrate the first Suk-
koth of Israel's independence.
Sukkoth services will have special
meaning at the Bessie Gotsfeld
Children's Village and Farm
School at Raanana, Israel, for the
Jewish orphans who are shown
here (left), shortly after their ar-
rival in the colony last year, bless-
ing the Lulav and Ethrog. The
photo on the right shows some
of the children in this colony,
sponsored by Mizrachi Women's
Organization of America, at their
Simhat Torah celebration last
year. Their observance of Sukkoth
and Simhat Torah this year will
mark the first anniversary of their
colony and the liberation of Israel.
Celebration of Sukkoth in Israel
in 5709 is mingled in the commu-
nity's military spirit made neces-
sary by the aggression of invad-
ing Arab countries. Israeli soldiers
are taking turns dividing their
time between the synagogues and
the battlefronts.
