ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, a
man of Bulgarian extraction
counted the change in his pocket
without having to go much higher
than 10 .. . He was pretty much
down and knew it . . . but he
wasn't out . . . not so long as
he could feel his heart beat, he
wasn't! . . . And so the fellow
approached a local car dealer
In town and asked if he would
/-
help him get started in the cab
business . . The change in his
pocket wasn't enough to buy
window wash, let alone an auto-
mobile! . . . But the dealer saw
something in this man . . . he
saw an undying determination
that was worth all the help he
could offer . . • He gave him not
one, but five . . . without even
asking, or caring, where or when
the man could get the money to
pay for them . • That was 20
years ago, and the man who was
down but not out has long since
proved the correct reasoning of
the fellow who started him off
in business .. . Today, he is the
owner of 500 cabs, with 300 oper-
ating in Detroit alone . . . His
name is Peter Theodore, presi-
dent of the Radio Cab Co. . . And
the car dealer? . • . he was
Aaron DeRoy.
ROY CLARK, hackster for the
company, told us that story . . .
as one of the reasons why Theo-
dore has always had such an
open heart for the Jewish people.

ONE OF THREE sectional divi-
sions of the National Brith Brith
Bowling Tournament . . . to be
held in February . . . will take
place in Detroit . . . with over
2000 keglers aiming at the head
pin . . . Last time local Bnai
,Brith played host at the tourney
was in 1941 . . . but next year's
blow-off is expected to make the
last one sound like a toy balloon
on Hiroshima . . . Preparations
are already under way and the
committee in charge is stopping
at nothing to make it the best
of them all!

"JOLLY JACK" GOLD, the
man who makes friends easier
than a radio jackpot winner, left
Cafe Burgundy for a month's
vacation that lasted only 24 hours
. . . The next day he took over
the Seville Hotel Lounge Bar .. .
and is the reason that spot has
been gaining such popularity.

WHILE WITH THE Detroit
News, a few years hack, we were
sent out to the Eastern Market
on the info that a man was sell-
ing pigeons . . . He was, and
the feature item was a front page
ditty . . . as it told about the
fellow who had people lined up
by his truck, waiting to buy what
they evidently thought were
squabs . . . On the way to the
Penobscot Bldg., last week, we
saw that man again, for the first
time since 1945 . . . on a corner
of the City Hall steps . . feed-
ing the pigeons!

BEST BET Of the Week . . .
Fourth Annual Yom Kippur
Night Dance of Bnai Brith Youth
Organization . . . Oct 13 . . . at

the noted melodies of Bob Strong

could easily hit the triple-G
mark.

LEGITIMATE BEEF comes
from musicians round town who
offer complaint that they can't
give their best in most of the
community's synagogues and
halls . . . "It's a wonder we can
even play anything," bemoans
one ryhthmist, "the way those
pianos are so much out of tune!"
May we recommend that some-
thing be done to ease this situa-
tion.

LITTLE MURRAY SABIN,
wee but popular haberdasher,
Yriernber of the advisory commit-
tee of the Michigan Retail Cloth-
iers and Furnishings Association

. .. was among the four persons
initiated into the Knighthood of
the Red Flannel Drawers . . .
at the Association's recent ban-
quet at the Statler . . . He joins
world famous celebrities in be-
coming a Knight in the order
whose password is "itch" . . .
and when Murray goes to Cedar
Springs, Mich., "City of the Red
Flannel Underwear" . . . he has
to repOrt, say the password and
then scratch himself in - recogni-
tion . . . He'll get a pair of the
fiery drawers . . . when the fac-
tory there finds it can make one
small enough to fit the little
man.

BILL CAPLAN of Graeme
Flowers tells about a fellow who
let out a disgusted roar after
lathering his face well and start-
ing to shave ... Wife asked what
was the matter .. . he told her
that the last razor blake he had
was too dull to cut . . . and she
replied, "That's silly, dear, your
beard can't be tougher than our

linoleum."

ONE OF THE most aggressive
youth groups in the community
. . Young People's Society of

Shaarey Zedek . . . is so busy
planning future affairs, that they
can't find time to hold a meet-
ing! . . . Frank Savine, former
president of YPS about 10 years
ago, will direct the new dramatic
group . . . After the holidays, the
Choral Group, Jewish Adult
Classes and Rhumba Instruction
Classes will begin . . . The kids
have been bowling every Thurs-

There ought to be an 'X' on
your calendar over Oct. 13 for
the Yom Kippur Night Dance at
the Grand Ballroom of Masonic
Temple with Bob . Strong and his
Orchestra. The Bnai Brith Youth
Organization has done a swell
job these last three seasons so
be there to make the fourth year
another huge success.

STARS APPEAR

Central High was really hon-
ored Sept. 30 at the 20th anni-
versary of the Fox Theatre. Cen-
tral's band was asked to help
welcome "first nighters" and the
Hollywood stars, William Hol-
den, Edmund Gwenn, Colleen
Townsend, Tony Martin and the
director, George Seaton, a one-
time Central student.
Casually speaking to a group
of autograph hounds, we were
told, Mr. Martin was very cordial
and to prove his Jewishness gave
out not with a song, but the
Seder table, "Four Questions."
Yep, he's our boy!

Greetings were offered by Shir-
ley Smith, Sandy Robinson, Sel-
ma Berry, Margie Cutler, Renee
Shear, Babs Levey and Nancy
Margules.
The New Year is here and we
do wish glad tidings to everyone.
We've all attended the synagogue
to be enlightened by the spirit
of the service and to pray for
the land of dreams—or. maybe
we haven't, we've let one of our
greatest rights as United States
citizens slip by. On Yom Kippur
we will have our yearly oppor-
tunity once more.
But let us not continue as ac-
quaintances but become real all-
year friends of our place of
worship.
