• "Books and Writers: Jewish
Festival, 1948," published by the
S-Outh African Jewish Board of
Deputies, Johannesburg, S. A., is
an impressive volume and is
highly informative.
The book is in four sections—
English, Afrikaans, Hebrew and
Yiddish. Among the noted auth-
ors • who have contributed to it
are Joseph Leftwich, S. Niger, M.
Ben-Moshe and J. L. Zlotnick.
Others whose essays apear in
the book are: Amelia .Levy, Kate
Froman, Edgar Bernstein, A.
vanSelms, Ehrhardt Planje, Uys
Krige, D. Mierowsky, S. Avin, I.
Charlash, J. M. Sherman and J:
Batnitsky.
The poetry of Yiddish and He-
brew writers, books for children,
educational institutions in Israel,
the Yiddish press and the teach-
ing of Hebrew -are among the
subjects which are interestingly
evaluated in this splendid bo -ok.

It is self-evident that political-
ly Israel is the state of the Isra-
elis and that Jews outside the
frontiers of -the Jewish state owe
it no political loyalty.
. Relationships of dependence-
physidal, spiritual or emotional—
cannot be easily and completely
reversed or recast into a pattern
of independpice. The real al-
ternative to dependence is not
independence but interdepend-
ence, a mutual give-and-take, a
community of sharing and re-
spOpsibility. Our sages compres-
sed these insights admirably in-
to the formula: kol yisrael are-
vim `zeh' — all Jews are
resp-Onsible for one another.
THE PROBLEM of the relation-
ship- of Yishuv and Diaspora did
not newly emerge on May 14,
1948. It dates back more than
two thoUsand -years when, as of
today, the Jews •of the Hellenis-
tic `and- Babylonian diasporas had
to. define. their relationship to
their countries and to the Yishuv.
As Yishuv - and Diaipora are
constituted' now, it would seem
that a certain amount of spiritual
authoritV should voluntarily be
Vested in ••.the Yishuv. Thii does
not imply that American Jews
shoUld take Orders froln Tel
Aviv. Good judgment,_
dictates that our aspora,
i
which is, after all, tragically es-
tranged from organic JewiShness,
defer in certain realms to the
Yishuv because it thrives in a
100 per cent Jewish climate.
NATURALLY, this will not pre-
vent the Diaspora from evolv-
ing its own expressions of Jew-
ish experience, but it will bring
a certain basic unity and coordi-
nation, though not uniformity,
into .the Jewish world.
No - doubt the Diaspora will
look to the Yishuv for the sorely
needed authentic and tradition-
attuned interpretation of - Jewish
law in terms of the needs of our
generation. But this again does
not rule out the possibility of
the evolution of Halacha in the
Golah.
IT WOULD SEEM that in the
era of the third.Jewish comnion-
wealth the relationship -of Israel
and the Diaspora must take the
form of an . interdependent ex-
change and correlation, under the
terms of which both. Yishuv and
Diaspora will give, receive and
share according to their respec-
tive capacities and needs.
11eril's inspired words, "We
are one people, one people!" re-
main valid also now when the
Jewish state has become a

Backer, president of the Jewish

following statement: "Miss Beat-
rice Heiman has been inaccurate-
ly described in a Washington dis

Jewish Telegraphic Agency.' Miss
Heiman has not been in the em-
ploy of the JTA since last spring.
She was dismissed April 10,
