U. S. City for 'Adoption' Leaves Gydnia for Israel
Between You and Me

L'Shanah Tovah:
The New Year will witness a strong fight in Washington for the
liberalization of existing immigration laws . . . Jewish organizations
have not as yet given up hope of having Congress amend its DP
immigration law which blocks entrance to the United States for most
of the displaced Jews . . . The New Year will also witness a stronger
Israel despite the efforts on the part of the enemies of the Jewish
state to prevent its development . . . Reports reaching Zionist lead-
ers in this country from Paris indicate that the recommendations of
the late UN mediator to revise drastically the present borders of
Israel may be softened during the present session of the UN General
Assembly . . In the United States the new Jewish year will witness
'a marked increase in Jewish educational activities in which various
groups will compete in order to gain influence over American Jewish
youth . . . Zionist activities in the United States will be intensified
soon after the new year starts . . . At present, the American branch
of the World Zionist Executive is considering leasing or even buying
a building in New York which would become the. headquarters of
the Jewish Agency for the entire American continent . .. The build-
ing is to house four of the major departments of the World Zionist
Executive—the organizational department, the economics depart-
ment, the )public relations department and the department for youth
education.

UN Notes:
Total death insurance of about $120,600 will be paid to the widow
of Count Folke Bernadotte . . . A certain State Department official
named McLintock seems to play a very important role with regard
to Palestine behind the scenes of the U. S. delegation at the United
Nations . . The American Jewish Committee and the American
Jewish Conference have sent special observers to the UN session in
Paris . . . These observers are considered as members of a consul-
tative body established by the State Department for UN affairs . . .
n-international legal authority considering what law the assassins
of Count Bernadotte can be arrested and tried under told newspaper
correspondents that the issue would seem to rest on a decision re-
garding the as yet undetermined status of Jerusalem . .. The author-
ity recalled the facts of the trial being held at present in Jerusalem
of two British subjects charged with passing information to the,
Arabs . . . "The legality of this trial," he said, "has been contested
by the British Government" . • .. The British argued that it was not
within the competence of any Jewish authority to carry out an arrest
in Jerusalem as long as the status of the city remains undetermined.
. . . "Presumably," the authority concluded, "Israel wishes to track
dawn and arrest the assassins and to bring them to justice beThre
their own courts" . . . It is obvious that this is exactly what Israel
wishes .. .
VIENNA, (JTA)—The Vienna
Jewish Community intends to ask
the Jews of New York or. Chicago
or of some other large American
Jewish community to sponsor or
"adopt" it in the same manner
that many American cities aid
Austrian or other European cit-
ies.
The Jewish Community here
is in desperate financial straits.
Only an approximate five per
cent of the community's budget
for social, cultural and relief
needs is met by the community
taxation system. Another 25 per-
cent is supplied by contributions
from Austrian Jews and the re-
mainer comes from the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee.
However, the JDC has informed
Jewish leaders that its allotments
for Austria are virtually exhaust-
ed and that the Vienna communi-
ty cannot expect as much help
from the agency in the future.
Unless another source of income
can replace the JDC's contribu-
tions, the community will be
force to sell communal property
in order to maintain even a re-
activities program.

Communal Affairi:
The Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds is now
conducting a population study for the American Jewish Committee.
. .. Provisional results of this survey reveal that the Jewish popula-
tion in thQ United States today is closer to 4,500,000 than. the
5,000,000 figure often mentioned ... The study also establishes that
75 percent of the entire Jewish population in the United States
resides •in 13 ' of America's largest cities . . . These are: Baltimore,
Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark,
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and San Francisco . . . The survey,
which is polling virtually every important center of Jewish popula-_
tion in the United States, seeks to provide data on about 1,500 com-
munities . . . The most interesting revelation is the fact that 66
communities, covering about sixty-five percent .of the total Jewish
population in this country, have themselves conducted special popu-
lation studies during the last decade . . . More than fifty other corn-
Munities, comprising eleven percent of American Jewry, have made
attempts to estimate their population size by means of correlating
contributors lists, membership lists and synagogue ' lists .. . The
Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds has now assigned
a staff which analyzes these studies under the direction of Harry L.
Lurie, its executive director . . . The Council hopes that the best
methods of estimating the Jewish population will be developed and
that the degree of dispersion of that population will be more sharply
defined.

At Spiritualist Conference
WARSAW, (JTA)—The Polish
ship "Torun" sailed from Gydnia
with a large transport of food
for Israel sent by the Jews of
Poland who" raised 115,000,000
zlotys ($230,000) for this pur-
pose.
The food, consisting mostly of
grain, was shipped with the per-
mission of the Polish government,
which guaranteed that the cargo
would be landed at Tel Aviv..

LONDON, (JTA) — An anti-
Jewish demonstration was staged
at a meeting of the International
Spiritualist Conference here.
While a German Jew was reading
a paper, two London residents,
former German priSoriers of war,
objected to a Jew "addressing
the conference in behalf of the
German Reich." The objectors,
Kurt Wagner and Erwin Scholz,
who also shouted "down with the
Jews," explained that they had
revived the German "Ostara"
movement while in a prison camp
in the United States. The move-
ment was both anti-Jewish and
anti-Christian during its pre-war
existence.
