American Jewish Committee re-
ceived information that Shafiq
Ades, an Iraqi Jew charged with
having aided the Israeli war of-•
fort by purchasing surplus Brit-
ish military materials and ship-
ping them to Israel, was hanged
Friday morning despite the inter-
vention of the American Minister
to Iraq.
Shafiq, who represented the
Ford Motor Co. in Iraq for 18
years, was tried • by a military
court and sentenced to death and
payment of a fine equivalent to
about $20,000,000. The death sent- !
ence was subject to review by
Kink Feisal, who approved the
sentence just prior to Ades' ex-
ecution.
(Ades' body was left hanging
in public for two hours in Bagh-
dad before his parents were per-
mitted to remove it.
(The Jewish News learns that
the Ford Motor Co. had made
serious efforts to save his life.)
