Mrs. Joseph H. Ehrlich, Chairman of Education Month
Committee, and Community Leaders Map Plans for Many
Events Arranged by Schools' Affiliated Groups
Members of all affiliated or-
ganizations of the United Hebrew
Schools on Monday evening of-
ficially launched the 22nd annual
observance of Hebrew Education
Month at an impressive gathering
held at the Rose Sittig Cohen
Building.
Officers of the schools, membeis
of the faculty and heads of organ-
izations functioning in behalf of
the schools participated in the
planning program, under the
chairmanship of Mrs. Joseph H.
Ehrlich, this year's Education
Month chairman.
Plans for this year's observance
of Education Month include the
traditional messages in the local
synagogues during the High Holy-
days, by rabbis and lay readers,
and the following additional
events:
A public meeting to be held
under the auspices of the Alum-
ni Association, either on Oct.
21 or Oct. 28, with Dr. Samuel
Blumenfeld, director of the
Bureau of Jewish Education of
Chicago, as guest speaker.
A special event arranged by
the Women's Auxiliary of the
schools, on the topic "The Edu-
cation of the American Jewish
Child." Theodore Bauch,
Wayne University instructor,
will discuss the public school
angle and Rabbi Moses Lehr-
man will speak on the Jewish'
school.
Sunday, Oct. 31, a brunch,
sponsored . by the Hebrew
Teachers Association and the
Parent - Teachers Association
Will be held at the Rose Sittig
Cohen Building.
A speCial . radio program, on
station WWJ, will be broadcast
within two weeks.
A special cultural 'evening.

In order to mobilize the syna-
gogue efforts, rabbis and lay
leaders will meet at luncheon
next Thursday to plan the ap-
peals during the Holydays.
Bernard Isaacs, superintendent
of the schools, in his introductory
remarks on Monday evening, re-
called that the room in which
the meeting was conducted—the

Begins Next Sunday
- NEW YORK—An intensive ra-
dio promotion effort for the fall
campaign of the United. Jewish
Appeal will get under way Sun-
day, Sept. 26, when the CBS net-
work will present a half-hour
J. H. Ehrlich Conference Room,—
was named in trihute to the mem-
ory -of the husband of this year's
Education Month chairman. He
pointed out that a great heritage
is being continued by Mrs. Ehr-
lich whose late hutband was one
of the pioneer leaders in the He-
brew schools.
Mrs. Ehrlich made a strong
appeal for cooperation by all
who are interested in advanc-
ing Jewish education and urged
that the Education Month ob-
servance be utilized to secure
- larger enrollments in the
schools.
Abe Kasle, president of the
schools, stated that the chief aim
of this year's observance is to
bring the message of the school
to all Detroit Jews and to seek
the enrollment of those children
which are not yet studying in the
schools.
In a stirring address, Albert
Elazar, associate superinten-
dent, declared that it is the
duty of all concerned to avoid
watering dowil- of Jewish edu-
cation, that a knowledge of He- -
brew can not be smiled by
studying the language in a Sun-
day school for 20 minutes a
week, and declared that a
great effort must be made to
secure a maximum result for
the Hebrew school children.
Among those who addressed
the meeting were Mesdames Al-
bert Elazar and Louis Gelf and,
in. behalf of the Women's Aux-
iliary; Allan L. Weston, for the
Alumni ASsociation; Solomon
Kasdan, for the Hebrew Teach-
ers Association; Mrs. H. Geren-
raich, for Parent-Teachers. Asso-
ciation; Joseph Katz and Mrs. Ju-
lius Ring, presidents of Kvutzah
Ivrith and Kvutzah's Ladies' Aux-
iliary.
• The radio program is being
planned by Jack Kellman and
Reuben Isaacs.
Bnai Brith Officers
Hold Seminar Sunday
At Fort Wayne Hotel
Greater Detroit Bnai Brith
Council will hold its annual
seminar at the Fort Wayne Hotel
at 9 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 26.
Purpose of the seminar is to
-acquaint the newly elected of-
ficers and committee chairmen
with their respective duties and
with the activities within each
group.
The seminar will be divided
into • sessions for the following
groups: Anti-Defamation League,
Aid to the People of Israel, mem-
bership conservation, BBYO, Hil-
lel, press and publicity, lodge
programs, president and finan-
cial secretary.
The seminar sessions will be
followed with ceremonies in
front of the hotel when the first
contingent of material for Israel
will leave Detroit. Luncheon
will be served at the Fort Wayne
Hotel, followed by a program.
The days' activities are in
charge of Dr. Lawrence Yaffa,
president of Louis Marshall
Lodge, and Milton Weinstein.

Detroit on station WJR.

Ann Rontal Completes
Nursing Assignment
For JEW' in Austria
Ann Rontal, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. David Rontal of Vassar
Dr., has returnel to Detroit after
completing an 18-month assign-
ment with the Joint Distribution
Cominittee.
As a supervising nurse, Miss
Rontal worked . with Jewish DPs
in Austrian camps. Her duties
included care of tb patients; pre-
and' post-natal care and advice;
organization and teaching of
nurses' training classes; arrang-
ing for provision of artificial ap-
pliances and medical care, and
supervision of public health_ ser-
vices.
Before her European assign-
ment, Miss Rontal was head nurse
at the Fort Ontario shelter for
Jewish refugees at Oswego, N. Y.
She also has been connected with
the American Red Cross and the
Detroit Department of Health.
