Building the Peace
As far as the State .Department is concerned Israel does not
seem to exist even though it has received de facto resognition from
the President of the U. S. . . . A recent pamphlet published by the
State Department lists the various states and countries .in the Near
East , but omits the state of Israel .. . The pamphlet, the sixteenth
of a series enitled "Building the Peace," refers to the unique religious
significance of the Holy Land and to America's financial, cultural and
humanitarian interests in Palestine .. . Because of strategic consid-
erations, the booklet says, the U. S. aspires for a solution which
would prevent the utilization of the current situation by disturbing
elements and influences.

Piipul:
At the recent Poale Agudas Israel convention one of the rabbis
asked another "Whence is it deduced that Abraham, our father,
wore a skullcap?" . . . The rabbi squirmed a bit in his seat and then
replied: "It is written in the Bible that the Creator of the Universe
told Abraham 'go thee forth.' Is it conceivable that Abraham would
have started on' this journey without a yarmelke?"

Give the Children
Jewish Education,
Council Appeals

The Jewish Community Coun-
cil urges the earnest considera-
tion by all parents of the state-
ment issued by the Association
for Jewish Education which
called for enrollment - of children
in:Jewish schools. The statement
was quoted in recent issues of
The • JeWish News.
To enable parents to make an
informed choice for their chil-
dren from the fifteen schools in
the Detroit area offering Jewish
education,• the Jewish Commu-
nity Council has compiled a di-
rectory listing each school,. de-
scribing the courses and stating
the philosophy under which each
- .operates. In this way it will be
possible for a Jewish parent to
select the school whose educa-
tional approach he prefers and
to send his children there. The
Council does not seek to support
one school at the expense of the
others, but only to make sure
that information concerning all
of them is made available to the
public. The booklet will soon be
available and may be obtained
by callipg the Council office, CH.
, 1657.
