Holiday Themes
Two Parallel Services
Arranged for Holidays
At Shaarey Zedek
Temple Israel will hold its
services for the New Year and
the Day of Atonement, in the
auditorium of the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts.
"We believe that this year is
the last time our congregation
will hold its High Holy Day
services in a rented auditorium,"
George M. Stutz, Temple ISrael
president, declared. "Next year
at this season, we hope-to greet
the Jewish New Year in our own
new Temple building."
Rabbi Leon Fram announces
the following sermon topics for
the holiday season: Rosh Hash-
anah morning, Monday, Oct. 4,
10 o'clock, "Power"; Kol Nidre,
Tuesday, Oct. 12, "Sanctuary";
Yom Kippur morning, "The Good
Life"; Memorial services on the
afternoon of the Day of Atone-\
ment, W e dtiesda y, Oct. 13,
"Shrine of Memories."
Cantor Robert S. Tulman, choir
director. Dan Frohman and or-
ganist Karl W. Haas will render
a program of traditional high
holiday music.
Temple Israel expects an over-
flow attendance at these services
and has arranged. a supplemen-
tary service 'in the Lecture Hall
of the Institute. Preacher at this
service will be Rabbi Samuel
Teitelbaum, director of the HilIel
Foundation of Northwestern Uni-
versity": The cantor will be Mor-
ris Kesner and the organist Mrs.
Edmund I. Gilbert.

Takes Flint Pulpit
All preparations have been
completed at Shaarey Zedek for
parallel High Holy Day services
in the social hall of the syna-
gogue as well as in the main
auditorium for the membership
of the congregation. Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler, Cantor Jacob H. Sonen-
Rabbi Arzt Cantor Dubow
klar and the Shaarey Zecrek
choir, under the direction of
Henry Goldberg, will alternate
with Dr. Max Arzt, visiting rabbi,
and Cantor Avrum Dubow of
New York city at -the two serv-
ices.
Rabbi Arzt, prior to becoming
director of field service and ac-
tivities at the Jewish., Theological
Seminary, • served as rabbi • at
Temple Beth El, Stamford, Conn.,
and at Temple Israel in Stran-
ton, Pa. In 1939, he served as
president of the Rabbinical As- ,,
sembly of Americ_., the conserva-
tive rabbinate of the United
States and Canada.
Cantor Dubow has served
many prominent congregations in
New York and New Jersey.
The schedule of services is as
follows: Selichot, Saturday, Sept.
25, 12 midnight; Rosh Hashanah,
Sunday, Oct. 3; 6 p.m., Monday,
Oct, 4, 8:15 a.m., Tuesday, Oct.
.5, at 8:15 a.m.; Sabbath Shuvah,
Oct. 9, 9 a.m.; Kol Nidre, Tues-
day, Oct. 12, 6 p.m.; Yom Kippur,
Wednesday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m.

day, Sept. 24; 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25. Rabbi Joshua Sperka
will speak on "First Fruits." Lawrence Rogers, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Rogers, will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. Pirke Abot
class at 6 p.m.; Mincha at 7 p.m., followed by Sholoss Seudess.
Selichot services at 12 midnight this Saturday. Rabbi Sperka,
Cantor Hyman J. Adler and a double choir, directed by Harry
Siegel, will officiate.

Temple of the Leo M. Franklin
Memorial Fund, in tribute to the
life, labors and contributions of
Dr. Franklin, who served Temple
Beth. El and the city of Detroit
during his nearly 50 years of
residence and leadership- in this
community.

ister the new fund: Julian G.
Wolfner, chairman, Dr. B. Bene-
