Zionist Council Calls
Emergency Conference

The new emergency situation
in Israel will be considered at
a special meeting of the Zionist
Council of Detroit on Wednes-
day evening, Sept. 29, at the
office of the Jewish National
Fund, Dexter near Elmhurst.
Sidney Shevitz, president of
the Council, urges all accredit-
ed delegates to be present at
this meeting.

as his last . contribution towards
a world of peace a sound basis for
settlement: He gave his " life to
this effort. -
"The complexities of the prob-
lem and the violent emotions
which have lleen engendered are
such that the details of any plan
could be debated endlessly. As a
matter of fact, the debate on this
question has been carried on for
years in: almost every kind of
public forum. It is our sincere
hope that the parties concerned
will realize that their best inter-
ests and the interests of the world
'community will be served by ac-
cepting in a spirit of fair com-
promise the judgement of Count
Bernadotte.

Arm Cabinet Officers
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Emergency
regulations to halt the spread of
anti-government terror, outlaw-
ing underground terroristic or-
ganizations and making member-
ship in them illegal as well as
declaring all aid to such extreme-
ists a crime were promulgated in
Israel following a four-hour meet-
ing of the Cabinet. All Cabinet
officers have been armed and
provided with armed escorts.
Issuance of the regulations
came during a day which saw
vigorous action to apprehend the
murderers of Count Folke Bert
nadotte and- Col. Andre Seret, his
aide. Although the curfew -im-
posed in Jerusalem was lifted to
permit life to return to normal,
raids were being carried out on
all known and suspected Sternist
centers.
Sternist underground appeal
declared that the "Ben Gurion
Government is using the methods

of the. British" against the Stern-
ists although their party is now
legally registered with the gov-
ernment.- "Because somebody shot
Bevin's representative — Berna-
dotte — 'and although the govern-
ment has no proof of our com-
plicity, our people are being ar-
rested and our offices are being
closed."
"A confession of responsibil-
Ity for the • assassinations was
sent to all foreign consulates in
Jerusalem by 'a group which
signed itself "Hazith Hamoled-
eth — Fatherland Front." The
government asserts that this is
a splinter group of the Sternist
movement, but a Siernist source
insisted that "we never heard
of it." The Fatherland Font
note said: "We killed Berna-
dotte because he worked for the
British and carried out their
orders."
Foreign Minister Moshe Sher-
tok and Dr. Ralph Bunche, Amer-
ican UN official who has been
named tempoarily to succeed
Bernadotte as head of the medi-
ation and truce machinery, con-
ferred for over an hour. Shertok
expressed Israel's sympathy and
sorrow at the murder and out-
lined the measures which the
government is taking to appre-
hend the assassins. Bunche re-
ported 'that UN Secretary-Gen-
eral Trygve Lie had placed the
Palestine situation on the Gen-
eral Assembly agenda and that
Gen. ,Aage Lundstroem, UN aide
to Bunche, has been ordered to
make an investigation of the in-
cident. Bunche's earlier statement
holding the Israeli Government
responsible for the deed was not
discus§ed.
A glovernment statement de-
plored Bunche's "recriminatory"
note and pointed out that the
murder was carefully premedi-
ated and could not have been
influenced by Shertok's state-
ments which were published only
Friday morning. In addition, the"
spokesman said, the hertok and
Yadin criticisms were not aimed
'at Bernadotte but at the obser-
vation set-up.

will be confiscated under terms
of emergency regulations pub-
lished Monday night. The Irgun
was not mentioned when Stern-
ists were outlawed.
Mr. Shertok received a cable
message from 11;000 Cyprus de-
tainees to Trygve Lie condemning
in strongest terms Bernadotte's
assassination and protesting the
latest Cyprus law which legal-
izes their detention. They assert-
ed it was a move unprecedented
