Historical Society Offers
3 Awards for Research
Essays on U. S. Jewry
NEW YORK—An essay contest
—the first such enterprise in the
57-year history of the American
Jewish Historical Society—is to
be conducted by the society,
which is offering cash prizes to-
taling $500 for the best essays on
a subject related to American
Jewish history. Announcement of
the competition was made by Lee
M. Friedman of Boston, president
of the society.
AJHS, now under sponsorship
of the National Jewish Welfare
Board, has as its aim in promot-
ing the contest encouragement of
research and investigation, in the
field of American Jewish history.
A cash award of $350 will go
to the winner of the first prize;
second and third winners will be
granted $100 and $50 prizes re-,
spectively. The contest will be
conducted during the period of
Oct. 1, 1948, and Sept. 30, 1949.
The rules of the contest include
the following:
Essays shall not exceed 10,000
words; while the subject of the
essay must be connected with
some aspect of American Jewish
history, the term "Jewish" is
construed as having "the widest
possible connotation;" essays
must be scholarly in character,
since literary merit will be an
important factor in determining
the awards; essays must be based
on documents, records, manu-
scripts and like material. -
