Israel Fears Washington-Made
u ich on Eve of UN Assembly

tEL AVIV (JTA) . —Although Count Folke Bernadotte is reported to have blamed the
Arabs for breaking the truce in his analysis of. his work an UN mediator, to be subthitted
to the UN General Assembly in Paris on Sept. 23, the Jews in Israel are asking whether
Washington is preparing a new Munich for Jewry. Even the Foreign Office here is con-
siderin.g this possibility on the basis of latest Palestine moves.
The question of the American attitude is being considered at Foreign Office discus-
sions which opened Tuesday in preparation for the forthcoming UN. Assembly meeting.
Eliyahu Epstein and Aubrey Eban figure prominently in these discussions.
The Israeli foreign policy now has two main objectives: 1. To acqUire membership
in the UN which would symbolize 'final international acceptanCe of the new state;
2. Peace, -which would 'permit Israel to return to constructive efforts.
There was some reason to believe that Israel would succeed in gaining admission to
the UN, until the recent unsatisfactory letter to Congressman Javits from Bohlen, U. S.
State Department official. Israeli spokesmen, however, remain hopefuL On the second
point; Jews fear most of all that the world confuses - the present truce with peace. • It is
declared that this is not. so because there is an actual war situation, except for the elim-
ination of large-scale military maneuvers.
It is stated here that Israel can hold out
against attrition, but if it continues "chaos
would result throughout the Middle East be-
cause Arab states are economically and po-
litically unprepared for drawn-out maneuv-
ers.

September 8 marked the retracing of steps to learning—
"along with the democratic American heritage, the heritage
of Judaism."
All of Detroit's Jewish schools—the seven branches of the
United Hebrew Schools, the Yiddish schools, the Yeshivoth—,
are enrolling new pupils; and the call to register children in
our schools is directed to all parents who owe it to themselves
and to their children to educate the youth in accordance with
the history, teachings, traditions and values • of Judaism.
Preparations are being made by the United Hebrew
- Schools to observe the annual traditional Education Month,
beginning with Rosh Hashanah.
Nationally, Education Month will start on Sept. 15. The
National Call to Parents, issued by the American Association
for Jewish Education, reads _ . in part:
"Without Jewish education, our children will not under-
- - stand that when the Hebraic tradition is rejected, the mechanics
and the social setting of democracy can be and have been per-
verted for the uses of tyranny. Teach them to understand and
to be proud that `Hebraic mortar cemented the foundations of
American democracy.'
