WASHINGTON (JTA)-Secre-
tary of State George C. Marshall
has ordered an investigation into
charges made by American citi-
zens interned last month by
Lebanese authorities in Beirut
that U. S. consular officials made
anti-Semitic remarks and were
dilatory in seeking their release.
In a letter to Rep. Arthur G.
Klein, Marshall said the report-
ed actions and statements at-
tributed to the American consul
in Beirut, John B. Fautt, were
"definitely not in accord with de-
partment policy. Officers of the
foreign service and of the depart-
ment are expected to exercise
the highest degree of respect and
tolerance for the rights and
dignity of mankind and are con-
stantly on the alert to avoid
incidents of this kind. I have
ordered an investigation and as
soon as a report is submitted to
the department I will write to
you again," the letter said.

on his way back to Israel, was
one of the interned Americans
who made the charge against
Consul Faust.)
