Israeli Court Frees Three
Britons Held for Espionage

TEL AVIV. (JTA)—The Israeli
court on Tuesday freed three
Britons from charges of espion-
age brought against them after
they were kidnapped by Irgun
Zvai Leurni members. Bail was
denied to two other accused Bri-
tons.
The released men are Alfred
Leech, Thomas M. E. Bryant and
Thomas Anthony Downes. Bry-
ant was acting general manager
of the Jerusalem Electric and
Public Service Corporation and
secretary. of the British civilian

and Downes were employed 'by
the corporation. It was under-
stood that all three would return
to their jobs. .
Judge Eliezer Malchi, London-
educated barrister, ordered the
release of the three men after the
police, iri J.1 minutes of examina-
tion, admitted there was no evi-
dence for holding them. The two -
men still detained are Frederick
W. Sylvester and William Gr Jaw-
kins, accused of operating a se-
cret radio transmitter in Jerusa-
lem. - Their counsel, Jacob Solo-
mon, Haifa barrister, asked for
their release on bail but the mo-
tion . was denied and they were
returned to Rishon Le. Zion prison.
Case Up in Ten Days
The judge informed counsel,
who wanted to know where the
arrest had taken place, that the
secret transmitter was found in
the German colony of Jerusalem
which is Israeli territory. Judge
Malchi said the case would come
up in -10 days. The prosecution
was instracted at that time to
present •its full charges, under
the defense regulation framed by
Britain as the mandatory potver,
a rule which is still Israeli law.

the U. S. has become equipped
to 'materially extend its program
of service to ex-GIs who are in
the process of returning to civil-
ian pursuits. MRS. IDA S. LATZ
is the woman who is of the opin-
ion that the rehabilitation of war
injured vets is not the sole .con-
tern of public bureaus, but the
responsibility of the private citi-
zen as well. The IDA S. LATZ
FOUNDATION, a private corp-
oration will administer a sub-
stantial - allocation of funds by
Mrs. Latz foe -the purpose of "pro-
viding aid and assistance supple-
mentary to aid now being extend-
ed by Federal, State and other
governmental agencies" in the re-
habilitation .of amputees and oth-
er disabled Jewish veterans:-

Before the 'trial, Judge MalChi
summoned all Hebrew press
journalists and warned them
against contempt of court in their
reporting of the trial, particular-
ly in any reference to the guilt
or innocence of any prisoner..
Detention of Irgunists
A question of the legality of
the powers under which the Is-
raeli Army Chief of Staff, or-
dered the detention of Peter Berg-
son, Jacob Meridor and three
other members of Irgun Zvai
Leumi was raised in the Tel Aviv
District Court, hearing. a habeaff
corpus motion in behalf of -the
accused men.
Max Selignian, counsel ' for
Bergson, argued that --the• emer-
gency powers invested in the
mandatory which were. taken
over by the Israeli government
did not include the powers held
by the British Army General
Officer in Command, and there-

fore the Israeli Chief of Staff,
Jac&v Dori, was not authorized
to order the ,detention of the , Ir-
gun Members under such powers..
The court . was adjourned to con-
sider Seligman's,. arguments.
• Acquit ISraeli Officers
• Eight Israeli .Army officers who
refused to "go into action against
the Irgun Zva • Leurni” during a
clash ;'liave , been acquitted by a
military court.
Dr: Arieh Steinberg, Israeli li-
aison with the International Red
Cross in Palestine, revealed that
850 :Jewish war prisoners are at
present in Arab hands, with 670
of these detained in Transj ordan,
130 in Egypt and the remainder
in Syria. The Red CroSs, he said,
has brought four shipMents of
food and medical supplies, the
detained Jews and has aso - ar-
ranged for them to receive and
send mail.
