Refusal by Arabs to ease the water situation in Jerusalem
again threatened the peace of the Holy Land early this week.
Israel's invitation to the. Arab states for a peace confer-
ence, transmitted to the Arab leaders by UN mediator Count
Folke Bernadotte, aroused surprise in view of the feeling
that a third round of warfare would prove decisively faVor-

able to Israel. Israel Foreign

Purely Commentary

"Deep-Running Fervor' o4 Two Great Friends
We have had several occasions to quote from the excellent
column, "Americans. All," by Dr. Daniel A. Poling, which appears
regularly in the New York Post. Our readers will recall that Dr.
Poling's son, the Rev. Clarke V. Poling, was one of the "Four Im-
mortal Chaplains" who died arm-in-arm' when the S. S. Dorchester
was sunk during the war after giving up their lifebelts to other
- passengers. Dr. Poling, one of the outstanding Christian Zionists,
recently wrote as follows in his column in the New York Post:
I have just talked with a young Baptist missionary who left
Jerusalem less than 10 days ago. His little family, the wife and the
three children, came on ahead. Their
compound, church and home are with-
in the fighting zone and when they
left were less than 300 yards from the
front line. Every inch of space was or
is now occupied by Jewish refugees.
When the Christian preacher was
called back by his board for consulta-
tion he turned everything over to a
young Jew whose shop was looted
'uring the battle for the ancient city.
This man knows his Palestine as no
other Christian with whom I have
talked. He speaks Hebrew fluently,
has a fair command of Arabic, is
friend alike of Arab and Jew; but he
is a Zionist with a deep-running fer-
vor. His quiet words, supported by a
dynamic philosophy, fairly sweep me
off my feet. He talks for peace and
brotherhood and always for Israel. He
is very sure that, left to themselves,
the Arabs and Jews of Palestine will Dr. Daniel A. Poling
live as good neighbors on the sacred soil and his faith in ultimate
victory has never wavered.
The Christian Church of America will do well to listen to this
young American. Missionary societies will be advised to turn away
from some other leaders and reconsider a few of the resolutions
they have passed! Though his stay may be brief, the return of this
young missionary to America is timely indeed.
Without delay the Security Council of the United Nations
should name the Arab states as aggressors in Palestine. By act of
the United Nations, Israel is a state—a recognized state, a sovereign
free state, and every shot fired across her borders is a threat to
world peace. ,
If ever an armed defense is justified, Israel's defense is fully
justified. The United States instituted the arms embargo unilateral-
ly. Let her now lift it unilaterally and, as she lifts the embargo,
grant full recognition.
These are the sentiments of one of the truly great friends of
Israel, based on the experiences in the Jewish State of another great
'libertarian. Both men have earned places of honor among the Has-
sidei Umoth HaOlom—the truly noble among the nations of the
world. Israel never can forget the encouragement we are receiving
om such fighters in the cause of liberty.

Bnai Brith Gathers Emergency Food,
Materials in Aid-to-Israel Campaign

Under the chairmanship of
Irving Fields, Detroit Bnai Brith
opened a concentrated drive for
its Aid-To-Israel project, last
week, under the auspices of Ma-
terials for Palestine, Inc.
In the campaign, which will
continue through Sept. 26, Bnai
Brith workers will campaign for
donations of a variety of ma-
t e r i a 1 s, particularly foodstuffs
and automotive equipment. No
money will be collected, Fields
emphasized, but a financial liaison
system will be set up whereby
individuals wishing to contribute
may have their funds translated
into materials through the co-
operation of Detroit wholesalers
and industrialists.
Get Israeli Directive
Headquarters for the drive is
at the Bnai Brith Council office,
712 Farwell Bldg. In addition,
Materials for Palestine, Inc.,
which operates throughout the
United States under the author-
ity of a directive from the Israeli
Government, is establishing a
branch office in Detroit.
Jerome Levitt and Martin
Agami, regional directors of Ma-
terial for Palestine, are in De-
troit to aid in the drive. Agami,
who has studied in Palestine and
served with Haganah, indicated

Supplies Sought
Among the supplies now being
sought are non-perishable foods,
such as dried eggs and milk,
canned cheese, canned beef, au-
tomotive equipment and parts,
ambulances, medical supplies,
farm equipment, industrial ma-
chinery and soft goods, such as
clothing, shoes and rainwear
suitable for the Palestine winter
and rainy seasons.
These materials are sent direct-
ly to the Israeli Government,
which distributes them according
to current needs, Agami ex-
plained. No duty is charged, but
United States export regulations
must be followed. All shipments
are subject to search, due to the
arms embargo, he said.
Series of 'Freedom Trains'
The Detroit campaign is part
of a special drive in key cities
throughout the country, to gather
materials for a series of "Free-
dom Trains to Israel." Chicago
recently climaxed an intensified
drive similar to Detroit's.
Although Materials for Pales-
tine is working, in this city, pri-
marily through Bnai Brith, all
organizations are invited to con-
tribute to the drive, Levitt said,
