MAX ISENBERGH, former
chief of the Appeals and Legis-
lation Branch of the • Departm-ent
of Justice office of alien property,
has been named counsel for
European operations of the
American Jewish Committee, it
was announced
by Federal
Judge Phillip
Forman of
Trenton, N. J.,
chairman of the
AJC Foreign
Affairs Commit-
tee. As legal
adviser for that
area, Mr. Isen-
bergh, who has
M. Isenbergh just completed
five years' service with the De-
partment of Justice as Special
Assistant to the Attorney Gen-
eral, will concentrate on prob-
lems of restitution and the juri-
dical status of displaced persons.
Mr. Isenbergh, who began his
professional Career in Washing-
ton as legal secretary to U. S.
Supreme Court Justice Hugo
Black, was formerly a member
of the Uhiversity of Chicago-
Law School faculty.
A heartening picture of indus-
try and useful activity among
Jews. in the DP camps in the
Stuttgart area, U. S. Zone of Ger-
many, was drawn by HAROLD
KAPLAN, who recently returned
to this country after almost two
years abroad as JDC area director.

A refugee doctor who fled
from Czechoslovakia V to the

United States in 1938 was re-
cently applauded by Look Maga-
zine for his outstanding research
in bringing medicine "within
sight of a long-sought goal—a
vaccine against poliomyelitis."
He is DR. FRANK GOLLAN, a
graduate of the University of
Prague, who himself suffered
polio at the age of 3, but sur-
vived uncrippled. Dr. Gollan,
whose research, was financed by
the National Foundation for In-
fantile Paralysis, was praised by
Look for isolating a polio virus
that is almost 100 per cent pure.
He is one of the many emigre
physicians who have been aided
to resume their careers in this
country by the National Com-
mittee for Resettlement of For-
eign Physicians.

BERG, president of the Jewish
National Fund of America, 'left
for Israel to attend the meeting
of the Actions Committee of the
World Zionist Organization, of
which he is a member, scheduled
to be held in Tel Aviv Aug. 28.
Judge Rothenberg also will take
part in a series of conferences
with Dr. Abraham Granovsky,
head of the World Jewish Na-
tional Fund, and other leaders in
Israel with respect to the future
program of land acquisition in
Israel in relation to the large
Jewish immigration that is ex-
pecte to come to Palestine within

America, who accompanied Judge
Rothenberg, will take part in
the schedtiled conferences.

WELFARE BOARD is the only
Jewish youth-serving organiza-
tion. in the U. S. - that will be of-
ficially represented at the Inter-
national Youth Conference, to be
held in London, England, Aug.
12 to 19, it has been announced
by S. D. Gershoidtz, executive
director of JWB. EMANUEL
BERLATSKY, forrper Detroiter,
program director of the Jewish
Center Division of the National
Jewish Welfare Board; will rep-
resent the JWB-sponsored Na-

Adds to Campaign Gift

In addition to an earlier pledge
of $75, the Ladies' Auxiliary of
Congregation Shaarey Shomayim
has contributed $200 to the 1948
Allied Jewish Campaign, because
of the special needs of -Haganah
and Israel.
Officers of the group whose
contributions will provide aid
also for the Jews of Europe and
for national and local causes in-
clude. Mrs. Abraham Weisner,
president; Mrs. Louis Besterman,
vice president; Mrs. Nathan Gold,
secretary; Mrs. Katz, recording
secretary; Mrs. Joseph Balberor,
treasurer; Mrs. A. J. Etkin and
Mrs. Harry Horowitz, hospitalers.
The contribution from the Aux-
iliary brings the amount raised
by the treasury gifts section of
the Campaign Women's Division
to $19,000, against a quota of
$15,000, according to Mrs. Sam-
uel B. Danto, chairman of treas-
ury gifts.

PROFESSOR EDWIN SAM-
UEL, principal and founder of
the Middle East College of Pub-
lic Administration in Jerusalem,
and son of Sir Herbert Samuel,
first British High Commissioner
for Palestine, will arrive in this
country in September to assume
his duties as faculty member of
Dropsie College's new Institute
for Israel and the Middle East.

Mlle. Gaby Wolff, a young
French woman who, during the
war years, helped channel hun-
dreds of orphaned children to
safety through the underground,
sailed from New York for France
on the Marine Falcon after a
year and a half of concentrated
training in social welfare at the
University of California.
A recipient of a scholarship
awarded her by the National
Council of Jewish Women, Mlle.
Wolff took graduate courses in
this country in preparation for
returning to her native land to
resume her child welfare work.
She will again be associated with
Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants,
relief organization for Jewish
children, with which she had
served as a key worker before
coming to the United States for
advanced. study. .

Mission for U. S. Army

TEL AVIV (Palcor) — Sub-
scriptions to the first Israeli Na-
tional Loan exceeded by 100,000
pounds ($400,000) the five mil-
lion pound ($20,000,000) goal,
Zvi Schreiber, director of the
loan, announced as Israeli banks
closed subscriptions.

Swiss Jewish Birth Rate Up
FRIBOURG, Switzerland, (JTA)
—It was reported in Zurich that
the Jewish birth rate in Switzer-
land, which since 1939 was on a
continued decline, was shifted
and is now on the increase. Jew-
ish births in 1946 and 1947
showed an increase of 2.8 and
1.9, respectively.

At the last moment the Olym-
pic team from Israel decided to
cancel out. The rigors of war
demanded that the male athletes
should stay at home and fight
with the Haganah. Consequently
the powers that be in Israel de-
cided on sending a token team
of two female track stars. How-
ever the Olympic big wigs de-
creed that Israel could not send
anybody to participate in the
games.

Rafael Halpern, Israel's strong
man, is touring this country to
learn about our physical educa-
tion systems. He has visited lead-
ing sports writers and was the
subject of a Dan Parker column
in the N. Y. Mirror. Halpern is
the son of a' rabbi and attended
a yeshivah for several years be-
fore he decided on giving up
the rabbinate.

Score Olympics Chairman
For Ruling Out Israelis
STOCKHOLM, (JTA) — Sig-
frid Edstroem, chairman of the
International , Olympic Commit-
tee, was sharply criticized in the
Swedish press for ruling Israel
ineligible for participation in the
international sports festival. One
newspaper, the Evpressen, urged
that he resign his post immedi-
ately, and pointed out that he
previously had agreed to the
holding of Olympic events in
Germany.
