Brooklyn Center Gives
$10,000 Capital to UJA

Contribution of $10,000 of its
capital funds to the "Destiny"
campaign of the United Jewish
Appeal to meet the emergency
needs of Israel was announced
last week by the Brooklyn Jew-
ish Center, leading Jewish com-
munal organization in Brooklyn,
N. Y. This is the first time that
the Center has made a gift from
its capital funds for any purpose,
it was pointed out by Judge
Emanuel Greenberg, president of
the institution.
- In addition to the outright gift
of Center funds, the organization
has opened a campaign for
United Jewish Appeal contribu-
tions from its members, even
though most of them have al
ready given. A goal of $500,000
has been set for this supplemen-
tary effort.

Dr. Cronin's New Novel:
Medicine, intermarriage

Dr. Archibald Joseph Cronin,
having triumphed with his "Keys
to the Kingdom," "The Citadel"
and other great works to the ex-
tent of abandoning medicine and
turning completely to writing, has
produced another great work due
this week, - "Shannon's Way,"
published by Little, Brown & Co.
"Shannon's Way" is a story
about a doctor who struggles to
complete research on typhoid fe-
ver, only to discover, after he
had successfully finished his job,
that a similar task was completed
a little ahead of him by an Amer-
ican. Doctors, however, will find
the medical angles in the book,
the physician's struggles, the hos-
pital intrigues, most interesting. ,
But there is another important
angle: that of intermarriage. Dr.
Shannon is Catholic and the girl
he loves, Jean Law, belongs to
the Brothers who would not tol-
erate an intermarriage. Shannon
argues with her father, but to
no avail. Only when both are
stricken with illness are they
brought together and the obsta-
cle of religion is overcome, in
spite of Jean's father's warning:
"In five years' time ... a hymn
tune overheard, a revival meet-
ing in the street, some recollec-
tion of her childhood, the realiza-
tion of what she has given up
.. • she will look at you and hate
you."
