When DR. .ANDREW KLEIN,
formerly chief rabbi of Budapest,
Hungary, was sent to Auschwitz
in 1944, he refused the "light
work" which the Nazis offered
him because of his position. He
insisted that he was physically
fit to labor side by side with
"common" Jews. This 'divine
inspiration," as he calls it, saved
the life of Dr. Klein, who is now
rabbi of Congregation Bnai Is-
rael in Kearny-Arlington, N. J.,
and a frequent speaker in be-
half of the United Jewish Ap-
peal. A day later, those doing
"light work" at Auschwitz were
herded into the gas chambers
and executed. Rabbi and M r s .
Klein and their two children,
Tiber, 13, and Leslie, 10, came
to this country last fall with the
aid of United Service for New
Americans and the Joint Distri-
bution Committee.
