While the UN representative
presented Count Bernadotte's
peace proposals to the Israeli
government, two Israeli liaison
appointees to Rhodes, who re-
turned on the same plane with
the UN courier, gave their re-
port to a special session of the
Cabinet.
The official communique stated
that Arabs broke the truce at
Sedjera in Lower Galilee Sunday
and that since June 11 Arabs
continually have been breaking
the truce in Nazareth, with UN
observers failing to halt them.
An Irgun broadcast said that
possibly -next week Irgun sol-
diers will be fighting shoulder
to shoulder with Israeli army
troops. It stated that 5,000 Ir-
gunists were not sworn in at
Monday's allegiance oath cere-
mony.
Sternists accused Ben-Gurion
of not permitting them to send
a food convoy to their soldiers
in Jerusalem. It was learned that
Irgunists compose approximately
eight per cent of the Israeli army
strength. -
Feelers put out by "a leading

sian Minister Plenipotentiary to
Israel. Goldie Meyerson is the

and without question the dis-
cipline of the Defense Army
of Israel, to obey all orders
and instructions given by its
commanders and to devote all
my strength and, if need be,
to give my life in defense of
my country."

a vote of confidence in its battle
against -the Irgun and two Miz-

Junior Service Group Assumes
Year-Round Civic Responsibilities
Carrying out the main purpose
of the Junior Service Group of
the Jewish Welfare Federation—
"to provide the Jewish Commu-
nity of Detroit a loyal and
efficient group of workers, whose
functions shall be to obtain funds
for the futherance of our com-
munal activities, local, national
and international and to further
the interest of our community in
such other capacities as may be
determined by the board of di-
rectors"—members of the JSG
board have taken responsibility
for seven separate projects which
illustrate the many facets of the
organization and the various
talents and interests of members
and leadership. The JSG program
was - announced this ,week by
Lawrence Fleischman, newly-
elected president.
The 26 members of the board
are drawn from every segment
of Jewish youth and among their
occupations are teaching, social
work, dentistry, law, publicity,
insurance and real estate; which
gives them well rounded experi-
ence to represent the 700 young
adult members of the group.
To keep themselves well in-
formed on the functions of the
important Jewish social service
agencies, the board is meeting
monthly this year at different
agencies of the Jewish Welfare
Federation. The first meeting
was held at the Jewish Home for
Aged.
The summer may signal a
lessening of activities for general
members of the group, but board
members will continue to
meet throughout July and August
to plan for the fall season.
Maintaining active participa-
tion in the Junior Service Group,
Sam Krohn, retiring president,
will direct the program commit-
tee.
In addition to the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign, young Jewish
adults take an important role in
general community social service
through the Community Chest
drive. In 1948 this phase of the
JSG program will be led by
Samuel Kaner.
With Charles Levin as chair-
man, the constitution committee
will study the bylaws of the
Junior Service Group. -In order
to maintain and expand the func-
tions of the JSG, the board feels
that the organization must con-
tinue to grow. The membership
committee, under the leadership
of Doris Moss, will direct itself
toward the enlistment of every
Detroit Jewish young man and
woman.
One of the most important new
committees of the organization is
the projects committee. Under
the chairmanship of Marjorie
Davidson, this group will work
toward encouraging the general
membership to participate in

Leonard Baruch, who was one
of the chairmen of the 1948
Allied Jewish Campaign, will
head the campaign planning com-
mittee, while the special gifts
committee, formed during the
campaign, will continue on a
year-round basis under the chair-
manship of Irving Goldman.
Each of the 26 board members
gives , several hours a week to
communal activity as part of his
responaibility in the JSG and
many of them also represent such
diversified organization as Hadas-
sah, Masada, YouneIsrael, and
Bnai Brith. Five of the board
members also serve on the board
of the Detroit Jewish Young
Adult Council; these include
Baruch, Fleischman, Natalie
Gaines, Jerome Kelman and
Harry Mirvis.
