ALTHOUGH BAD WEATHER
. made a concerted bid to keep the
crowd down, Latin Quarter was
pleasantly filled for the "Salute
to Israel" affair . . . and. a good
time was had by all ... The big
floor show was opened with
songster Dave Gutman leading
the audience in singing The Star
Spangled Banner and Hatikvah
. and then giving an inspir-
ing rendition of Dave Taxe's new
tune, "My Israel" ... all proceeds
, of which will go to Haganah .. .
Julie Adler had an entire music-
al production ready for the oc-
casion . . and the thunderous
applause that followed was proof
enough that Julie and her won-
derful troupe had given a mas-
terful performance . . it was so
professional ... As master of cer-
emonies, we could hardly ask for
anything more than that, offered
by this fine group of talented
youngsters . . an outstanding
tribute to Julie's magnificent
teaching ability.

the '39 Ford bought on the com-
munity plan by youngsters, Ir-

Clarence "Chick" Salzberg and
Bill Wizner . . . Verbal duel to
get word in edgewise at local
eatery, last week . • . as Mel Cap-
lan told of terrific game of golf
he had played ... and Sol Phillips
rushed words about his recent

case of who could outfib the

PHILIP HANDLER LODGE
. new Bnai Brith group . .
had initial installation of officers,
last week, at impressive cere-
monies which also included pres-
entation of its charter . . . With
likeable Dave Katzman as first
president, the lodge is expected
Fir
to go far in BB circles . . . and
preserve a cherished memory of
the boy in whose honor it was
named . . . by a group of his
friends . . .- Philip Handler died
in civilian life six months after
returning from two years of ac-
tive service overseas ... and this
was appropriately selected as a
fitting and lasting memorial in
his behalf . . . by 12 boys who
have, since organizing, upped the
membership to 150 ... Sam Shul-
man, who, incidentally, was the
first president of the Louis
Brandeis Lodge, was installed as
honorary president . . . because
of the grand work he did in help-
ing to bring about - the realization
of the Philip Handler Lodge.

cert by Gladys Swarthout . to

ber • . . Get Alfred Bounin to tell
you of the days he was in silent
pictures . . . That was about 1916
when Hollywood was just known
as a small town in,California .. .
and the majority of movies were
being made in and around New
Jersey and New York . . . Third
Annual National Convention of
Bnai Brith Young Men and
Young Women . . . being held
jointly, the weekend of July' 2,
at Hotel Tuller . . . leaves little
lacking in the way of something
to do for all the delegates who'll
be coming from the many cor-
ners of the country . . . The pro-
gram committee is making cer-
tain that this will be the greatest
convention of them all ... Letter
from Florence Keywell in Buf-
falo, N. Y., agrees with our re-
1 cent bit about that delicious
cheese pie at The Tasty Shop
operated by Sol Fineberg . . .
Florence is a buyer for Sattler's
Department Store and adds that
"My only contact with home is
the Jewish News." • . Visitors to
I California say that a big thing
out on the coast is blood dona-
tions to Israel . . . and that an
effort is on to refrain folks from
giving it elsewhere lest it fall
into Arab hands.

GROCERY MAN Sy Fink tells
of hiring a new boy, last week,
to work in the store . . . and
among the other instructions, ex-
plained that if he didn't happen
to have what a customer wants,
to suggest something else as
nearly like it as possible . . . soon
a woman came into the store and
asked the boy, "Have yeu any
fresh green stuff today?" . .
"No, ma'am," answered the boy,
"but we have some nice blueing."
(Sy swears it's the truth.)
