"an inhibiting, even paralyzing
influence on Jewish life."
Dr. Steinberg denied that, "with
Israel come into being, the Jew
will be torn in sentiment and
political allegiance between it
and America. Zionist theory," he
said, "has long been challenged
on this score; its response is
now well worked through and
authoritatiVe. Almost froin the
very beginning, teachers of
onism have insisted that Jews
outside of Palestine would re-
main citizens of their . respective
lands and politically nothing else.
The American Jew, accordingly,
owes one, and only one, civic
allegiance to America. Were war
to break out between Israel and
this country, he would be duty
bound to throw in his lot un-
swervingly with the United
States, even though that meant
bearing arms against his Jewish
brethren, Which indeed would
be no novelty," Dr. Steinberg
continued, "Jews having fought
against one another in every war
in modern times."

the new ' state of Israel brings
up any question of dual:loyalty. ,
for American Jews, Rabbi Milton
Steinberg • of the Park Avenue
Synagogue, New York, declared
that "just as the independence
of Eire made no essential differ-
ence in the relationi of Irish
Americans to the United States,
so the rifve state of Israel leaves
intact the integrity of the Amer .-.
ican Jew."
Dr. Steinberg made this state--
ment in a full discussion of-
"Israel and the American. Jew"
which is a part of a- wholly- re-
vised edition of "The Making
of . the Modern Jew: From the
Second Temple to the State of
Israel" published by Behrman
House, Inc., exactly one month
after the declaration of the free
state of ISrael by the Jews of
Palestine.
Stating that misgivings con-
cerning Israel and the relation
of American Jews to it are "un-
warranted, selfish and cowardly,"
Dr. Steinberg urged that they
be removed from American Jew-
ish life before they constitute
