vention Tuesday adopted the following resolution greeting the
State of Israel : '
"We welcome Israel into the family of nations and take
pride in the fact that the Republican Party was the first to call
for the establishment of a free and independent Jewish COmmon-
wealth. The vacillation of the Democratic administration, on this
question has undermined the prestige of the United Nations. Sub-
ject to the letter and spirit of the UN Charter, we pledge to Israel
full recognition with its boundaries as sancOoned by the UN and
to aid in developing its economy."
Sen. Taft and Gov. Dewey predicted the success and survival
of the State of Israel in messages to the convention of Mizrachi
held this week in New York.
Halt Dissidents' Anti-Truce Move
(JTA).-L-The Israeli government on Tuesday announced
that the battle between its troops and the Irgunists on a beach north of
Nathanya had ended _after a number of casualties were inflicted on both
sides. The clash developed when the Irgunists attempted to land a cargo of
war material in Israel in violation of the United Nations truce.
Irgunists surrendered after suffering six dead, 14 wounded. Israeli
army lost two dead, suffered three Wounded. Surrender terms included
giving up all arms, except those aboard ship, all vehicles. used by

Irgunists on beach, signing of statement by each Irgunist declaring he
will place himself under government's command and will • obey its
orders. The vessel will be kept off Tel Aviv, disposition of cargo will
be decided so as not to infringe on truce terms.
The government said that capitulation of the dissidents was imminent
and issued an ultimatum to the Irgunists, to cease their splitting activities.
It was lear.ned that the Israeli high command had decided • to halt the land-
ings before the war material-reached the beach. A Palmach barge ap-
proached the Irgunist gun runner and fired upon it until the Irgun com-
mander on the ship radioed: "Don't fire on ship. Children still are on board
and also large quantities of arms and ammunition." •
The 4,000 ton ship Helena, loaded with heavy implements of war,
arrived under cover of darkness Monday off the village five miles north of
Nathanya. and Irgun soldiers secretly rushed its illegal cargo ashore.. They-
were detetted by government soldiers who barricated all roads .leading to
the village and ordered the erstwhile underground fighters to surrender
their loaded trucks. When they refused, fighting between the two JeWish
forces commenced.
The Irgun °broadcast said that a "war of fratricide" had _occurred in
-
Israel' and several Jewish soldiers were killed.
, The UN truce commission observation plane spotted the ship. UN
observers tried unsuccessfully to visit the scene of insurrection. -
The government called on all citizens to stand by it against "This grave
effort< to undermine the state." It said it would not permit any individuals
or forces outside its army to make a "very base attack upon us."

goods Co. to Materials for Palestine, Inc., for the establishment of a
gymnasium in Israel in memory of the late Benny Leonard, former
lightweight boxing champion of the world.

offices of the Israeli Mission at 2210 Massachusetts Ave.,' Washington D. C., and affixed 10 silver
mezuzot on the door panels - cf.-the Mission's headquarters. In a simple ceremony attended by HON.
ELIAHU EPSTEIN, the Israeli envoy (second from tight), ARTHUR LIVERHANT, (right), and other
members of the Israeli Mission, Rabbi Klavan formally presented the silver mezuzot to Mr. Epstein.
After a brief speech in which Rabbi Klavan expressed his pleasure at being able to officiate at the
ceremony. Mr. Epstein replied that he considered it an honor to have such a distinguished represent.

Detroit's greatest fund-raising effort will' close on Monday evening with a dinner at
the Book Cadillac Hotel. Hon. Arthur Lourie, Consul-General of the State of Israel
in New York, and Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, European director of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee, will be the guest speakers. To make the event a genuine victory
celebration, it is imperative that the entire I X48 Allied Jewish Campaign quota
of $6,200,000 should be raised by Monday evening. During the four remaining
days of this week-end, Detroit Jews myst give an additional $450,000 to boost the
fotal raised thus far to the urgently needed goal. By combining our energies for
this great task—of strengthening Israel, assuring a better future for DPs, assisting in
