Israel's Cooperation in Truce
Base on De Jure Recognition
TEL AVIV. (JTA) —A grim but determined Jewish -community is watch-
fully waiting for results of truce negotiations which are marked by rulings that
have aroused widespread resentment. Making concession after concession, with
the extremist Irgun Zvai Leumi and Sternist groups submitting to decisions of
the Israel government, the Jewish State is cooperating with the mediators but
has made it plain to all concerned that any attempt to amputate the small state

will be rejected, that participation of the British in truce negotiations will not be tol-;
erated in view of Britain's antagonistic attitude to Israel and its support,of the Arab Legion,
and that the basic condition for any truce is the -de jure recognition of the existence of Israel.
United Nations truce observers refused to permit a cargo ship to land 230 motor trucks •
and machinery for truck repairs. It was the first preventive action taken by UN repre-
sentatives• in Palestine and brought protests from Jewish offiCials. The ship's bill of lading
said that the trucks had been bought by. individual Jewish residents for civilian use. The
UN observer suggested that the trucks be kept on board pendirig a decision at a higher
level, presumably Count Folke Bernadotte, on whether trucks could be called "potention
war material."
The Israel government proposed that the trucks be landed and kept under UN con-
trol pending a final decision. The whole question was brought to the attention of Capt.
S. D. Willingham, U. S. Navy, senior member of the UN truce team here, who went to the
port area with a Jewish official. On his return he said: "We still are discussing the matter.
Everything is frozen there now."
An assistant to Moshe Shertok, Israel's Foreign Minister, indicated that the pro-
test might be filed with Bernadotte, but he emphasized that in no circumstance would any
step be taken in violation of the truce commission's ruling. -
Arab soldiers were warned that they will be tried for treason by military courts if
they converse with Israeli troops across the lines during the truce period. The Ramallah
radio station broadcast an order from the Arab Legion high command forbidding all con-
versation between Arab and Jewish troops.
At the same time, Israeli police officials 'issued a warning to Jews to be on the alert
for "enemy agents and spies who are in our midst. It is the duty of all citizens to inform
the police of all suspicious behavior and acts." ,
All elementary schools and kindergartens reopened her . on Tuesday after being
closed-during the rhajor part of the Arab-Jewish war upon the . proclathation of Jewish

Tuesday's announcement that air service between Haifa and Cyprus and Haifa and Europe
will be restored under the Israeli government license. this week. Air mail between Israel
and the Soviet Union was resumed this week.
For the first time since the Arab-Jewish war, two. new Jewish settlements were
founded Tuesday in BOsan Valley area on land formerly owned by the mandatory power
but which now is 'incorporated into the boundaries of Israel. Hashomer Hatzair and Hapoel
HarriizraChi settlers established the two settlements.

JERUSALEM (JTA) i—Although the cease fire order
is complete in Jerusaleni, members of the truce commis,
sion met with Bernard Joseph, Israeli delegate to the
mediators staff here, to discuss and iron out such prob-
lem§ as the shipping of food and water to all parts of the
city, posting of security detachments at holy places and
arranging for civilian traffic. Aniong Jewish proposals
was one that the UN assume responsibility for repairing
water supply installations to both Jews and Arabs in
Jerusalem.
(Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of Israel, told a Paris
press conference that there is no truth in reports that he
is negotiating with "personalities" in Great Britain to
obtain recognition for the Jewish state. President Weiz-
mann said that the Jews will never agree to exchange the
Negev for western Galilee. The Negev, he declared, offers
great development possibilities . while western Galilee has
a large Arab population.)
