Holding practically all of the territory of the State of Israel and being masters of
nearly 400 square miles of Arab territory which was, taken in order to protect the
Jewish colonies, the Jewish State has launched plans for unprecddented peace-time in-
dustrial and cultural activities which will commence as soon as peace is enforced.
"Life goes on" in Israel, but even before the truce, which was scheduled to go
into effect at 2 a. m. Friday, great vigilance was exerted to continue the normality
of Jewish life and to guarantee the continuation of the educational and constructive
activities of the Jewish State.
The only damage to Jewish possessions has come from the Transjordan. Legion,
which has taken the old city of Jerusalem but which has been kept out of the .new
Jerusalem quarters, Iraqi and Egyptian troops.
A JTA report on Tuesday from Tel Aviv stated that an air raid bomb hit the United
Nations Palestine mediators' office in that city, damaging that structure but not injur-
ing any of the UN personnel. Other bombs fell in crowded streets, killing a number of
men and women. Spitfires machine-gunned the streets, killing civilians.
Nothing of importance happened on the central and northern fronts. Two children
were killed in Monday's Egyptian raid on Tel Aviv, and many persons were injured.
Rehoboth also. was bombed, causing several fires. Egyptian troops claimed to have cap-
tured the Jewish village of Beit Sanim between Majdal and Isdud, capturing 110. Jews,
but an Israeli communique states that heavy fighting is still in progress there. An Arab
Legion attack on Sodom was repulsed.
After Israeli's capture of Qaqan at Tulkarm in the Nablus-Tulkarm-Jenin triangle,
many Arab civilians were reported in flight, creating a problem for the Arab military
because it blocks and hinders • the movement of their troops.
Reports continue to come in from many quarters of an impending Israeli agreement
with Abdullah, but some of the sources maintain that these are British-inspired rumors.
A dispatch from Nicosia reported that the 24,000 Jews detained on Cyprus have
gmounced theY would begin a 24-hour hunger strike in protest against Britain's ban on
the immigration to Israel of able-bodied man. The interned Jews sent a message to Ulf
Secretary-General Trygve Lie, warning him of the "consequences of the ban."
At least 200 Iraqi troops were killed in the Qaqun fighting, Haganah announced, while
12 Jews lost -their lives when Israeli troops seized the town.
A Haganah communique denied an Amman broadcast claiming that the Hebrew
University and Hadassah Hospital atop Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem have surrendered
to Arab Legion forces. The communique termed the broadcast "completely without
foundation."
The provisional government of Israel issued an announcement stating that former
Jewish dissident military groups are receiving "a full share of funds, arms and equip-
ment" now that they are incorporated into the Israeli Defense Army. Therefore, the
announcement said, separate fund-raising collections for these groups, both in Palestine
and abroad, are unnecessary and unauthorized.
In Jerusalem, the chief rabbinate has ordered the reading of Psalm 79 at Shevuoth
religious services throughout the world next week "to giire solemn public expression to
the poignant grief and paip. caused by the destruction of. the Scrolls of the Law and
