Bevin's Order Violates UN
Palestine Truce Resolution

LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y. (JPS)
—The Security Council's call for
a four week truce and cease fire
order in Palestine, which the
British proposed in the Council
less than two weeks ago, was
blatantly violated by the United
Kingdom Government which last
week imposed a ban on the im-
migration of Jewish refugees of
military age to Israel from Cyp-
rus. The resolution, as amended
and passed by the • Security
Council expressly provided for
the admission of. all Jewish im-
migrants to Israel provided they
were nOt trained or mobilized
for fighting during the period
of truce.
The ban, ordered by the Brit-
ish Cabinet, made it clear be-
yond the shadow of a doubt
that Bevin's true motive for
pressing the truce was re-imposi-
tion of the detested White Paper
against Jewish immigration.
Aubrey Eban, Israeli representa-
tive at the United Nations, lash-
ed out against the ban declaring
that Jewish immigration was the
undying urge of the Jewish peo-
ple and Israel will not permit
trespassing of its sovereignty.
Ben Gurion Warns Arab States
David Ben Gurion, Israeli
Prime Minister and Minister of
Defense, warned, in an address
before the Council of State here
that Israeli forces will carry the
land and air war across the
borders of the Arab states if the
latter persist in their attacks on
Israel.
Mr. Ben Gurion spoke as
Israeli land and air forces were
mounting a general offensive
against the notorious . Nablus-,
Jenin-Tulkarm triangle in cen-
tral Palestine, the chief Arab
Stronghold. At last reports Israeli
Army units were engaged in
fierce hand-to-hand fighting in
the streets of Jenin, northern
apex of the triangle. Other
Israeli forces were battling less
than five miles from Tulkarm,
the triangle's western most
point, while Israeli planes bomb-
ed Nablus, in the east, the larg-
est of the three towns. Israeli
shore batteries, air craft and
naval units, in a combined op-
eration, drove off an Egyptian
naval force of four ships at-
tacking the coast north of Tel
Aviv.

Events Affecting Israel

The following is a resume of
events throughout the world .af-
fecting Israel:
Bowing to public criticism, the
British Government banned the
export of war material to the
Arab states warring on Israel.
The ban also includes Palestine.
The Board of Trade, in its
order revoking all licenses • for
the shipment of military equip-
ment to the Middle East, said:
"For some time licenses have
been refused for the export of
war material to these countries,
but this order revokes all licens-
es for the export of explosives,
even if destined for industrial

use."

Two Egyptian bombers which
raided Tel Aviv and its northern
suburbs were shot down by in-
tercepting Jewish fighters.
Arab planes also bombed Ris-
hon l'Zion, south of Tel Aviv.
The Stern Group has informed
the 'International Red Cross that
three of their soldiers were
wounded by shots fired from the
YMCA compound in Jerusalem,
within the area controlled by the
Red Cross and supposedly de-
militarized.
High praise for the Jews in
the Arab countries coupled with
assurances that nothing will hap-
pen to them as long 'as they "re-
main loyal to their own mother-
lands" and maintain no relations
"with the Zionists of Palestine"
was voiced by Lebanese delegate
Charles Malik in a statement be
for the UN Security Council.
Maotz Yam, the first Jewish
naval college, has been found-
ed "somewhere in Israel." The
college will train officers and
men for a "fighting" Jewish
navy. Its first class contains
150 naval cadets. The college

win cooperate with the nauti-

ina school at the Haifa Tech-
Weal( Institute, which trains
-men for the merchant marine.

rwoctioning under the control

of the Navy Department, the
college will offer courses in
radio, electricity, mechanics,
meteorology and astronomy.
Its funds will come from a
$400,000 grant by the Jewish
Maritime League, whose Pal-
estine branch will provide 25
percent of the total, the re-
mainder coming from abroad.
Seven Jews were sentenced to
three-year prison terms by an
Iraqi military court after police
found a small quantity of arms,
explosies and hand grenades in
their possession.
Egypt has rejected a U.S. pro-
test against a maritime blockade
imposed by three Arab states on
Palestihe's coast, the State De-
partment announced.
A citation honoring the state
of Israel "for offering refuge to
displaced Jews in Europe" was
presented by the Churchman
magazine. Bishop G. Bromlay
Oxnam, of the New York area
of the Methodist Church, made
the presentation to Dr. Israel
Goldstein, chairman of the United
Palestine Appeal.
Dr. Liakim Ostashinsky, mayor
of Rishon L'Zion, called on the
Israeli Government to protest
the air bombing of his town by
Egyptian planes to UN mediator
Count Folke Bernadotte. Mayor
Ostashinsky pointed out that the
town has no military targets of
any sort and that the Arab
planes, consisting of two Dakota
bombers and some. Spitfires,
dropped numerous bombs on the
town. One hit a bus station in
which many school children

were waiting to return home for
lunch. Many were killed, some
of the bodies are unidentifiable
because they were blown to bits.
Ostashinsky pointed out that the
planes came down as low as 1,000
feet in their bombing and straf-
ing runs and the pilots must
have known •that their targets
were non-military.
Israel's new women's army
auxiliary made its formal
debut. The women's auxiliary
force is known as Chen which,
in Hebrew, means Women's
Army and also means "charm."
The U.S. Army 'Department
has instructed occupation
