REHOVOTH, Israel.—The - sci-
entists at the Chaim Weizmann
Institute of RehovOth opened up
almost unlimited possibilities in
the field of industrial and agricul-
tural development throughout the
world when they discovered pro-
cesses to manufacture plastic ma-
terials from castor oil. Growing
wild in various parts of Israel, in-
cluding such as the -Negev, and in
sand-dune areas between Gaza
and Tel Aviv; the castor tree pro-
vides the Weizmann scientists
with necessary raw materials.
This . process came about after
a group of Dr_Weizmann's friends
a.
in. France, chief among them Dr.
M. Genas, succeeded in- obtaining
a colorless and odorless plastic
material from castor oil by a rel-
atively simple cheniical process.
When this process was applied to
the specific conditions Of Pales-
tine, it was found that the prop-
erties of this nylon-like plastic
material was -of • such excellent
quality that a . variety of different
articles, ranging from textiles to

household goods and parts of in-, •
dustrial machinery, may be man-
ufactured from this process.
The production of plastic ma-
terials from castor oil has now
entered the stage of experiments
on a semi-commercial scale, by
the erection of a pilot plant.
