Political Notes .
. As developments continue at Lake Success, it becomes more and
more obvious that the war against Israel is actually being conducted
by Britain • .. Every move the British delegation makes at the
United Nations is calculated to strengthen the position of the Arab
countries fighting • the Jewish state.
President Chaim Weizmann is planning to sail for London at the
end of this month to make a last attempt to improve matters with
the British GoVernment . . . Strangely enough, Weizmann had more
influence with President Truman than with British Prime Minister
Bevin despite all his services for Britain . . President Truman's
swift recognition of Israel, in which Weizmann played no small role,
will have to be confirmed by Congress before it can have de jure
status instead of de facto . . . But there is no doubt in Zionist circles
that such a confirmation will be given . . . There are still elements
in Washington working very strongly to influence President Truman
against giving any aid to Israel.
Israel's Diplomats
Heartiest congratulations to my friend Eliahu Epstein on his
becoming the first Israeli Minister to the United States . . Modest
by nature, he enjoys high respect among diplomats in Washington
and at Lake Success . .. His first diplomatic rob in the United States
was to act as Jewish Agency observer at the founding of the United
Nations at San Francisco . . Previously, he represented the Agency
in Turkey and other countries.
Israel's first •representative at the United Nations, 33-year-old
Major Aubrey S. Eban, is also one of the most popular figures at
Lake Success . . _This, despite the fact that he arfived in this coun-
try only several weeks ago . .. A South African, he was educated in
England, where he later became a member of the faculty at Cam-
bridge . . . His specialty was Arabic • and Persian literature . .
During the war he served with the British forces as a major and was
sent to Palestine to lecture in Arabic in the Arab towns of Nablus,
Jenin and elsewhere to win support for the Allies .. . He remained,
in Palestine when the war ended and joined the staff of the Jewish
Agency as an expert on Arab-Jewish relations ... He is the youngest
diplomat at the UN Security Council . . . There are quite a number
of other diplomats sent by the Israeli Government to Washington
and Lake Success to serve under Epstein and Eban . . . All of them
are young men from the Jewish state who have completed a special
Agency Course for training criplomats which was established in anti-
cipation of the creation of the state.

Arts and Letters
You may be interested to learn that of 65 best known American
sculptors, 26 are Jews : . . Foremost of them is Jo Davidson, who
needs no introduction anywhere.
'Jacques Zucker, who did much painting in Paris and in Pales-
tine, attracted great attention in New York through an exhibition
of his paintings at the famous Bingou Gallery . . . Critics consider
him a gentle dreamer, a .sagacious observer and a remarkable.
craftsman.
The Jewish Museum in New York now has a very interesting
one-man exhibition of more than 30 biblical paintings by Ben-Zion.
• The series was done by the artist during the last ten years and
represents one chapter in Ben-Zion's voluminous work . . . Paintings
on Palestinian and Jewish themes are included in an exhibition by
Nota Koslowsky, noted Jewish artist, now shown at the Norlyst Gal-
lery in New York.
Congratulations to colleague Aleph Katz, editor of the Yiddish
department of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, whose 50th birthday
coincided with the day when the independence .of Israel was pro-
claimed.
Best wishes also to Harry Rogoff, managing editor of the Jewish
Daily Forward, on the occasion of his 65th birthday, which is being
celebrated this week .
