A Tribute to Fred M. utzel
In behalf of the organized social welfare, cultural and communal services in Jew-
ish life, we express through our board and staff members deep sorrow on the death of
Fred M. Butzel, dean of Detroit Jewry and one of the giants in Jewish community devel-
opment of his generation.
There is scarcely an achievement of the Jewish community since the turn of the
century which was not in some measure shaped and influenced by the intelligence, the
vision, the humanity of Fred M. Butzel. These virtues he shared in the same full measure
with peoples of all races and creeds toward development of a full, and dignified society.
So faithfully did he pursue wisdom and so generously did he give of himself and of
his worldly goods that he shall have the most lasting memorial man can know—in the love
and reverence of the countless ones to whom he gave personal aid and in the achievements
and glories of the Jewish people whose communal history he helped to form.
