These are the fighters for Israel's freedom—the men who came to convert the swords into pruning hooks but who were compelled to take up
arms in defense of their people and their land—of ISRAEL. These are the men of Haganah to whom Jewry everywhere pledges its support--and
whom the Christian world, aroused by a sense of justice and fair play—urge to carry on for the sake of freedom for Israel and all mankind.
To Arms—And Plows
"They Shall No More Be Plucked Out of Their Land"
The rebirth of the Jewish State does not
lighten Jewry's responsibilities—it increases
them.
Prophecy has come true and Zion has been redeemed with justice.
The historic hour of 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, 1948—the fifth day of Iyar, 5708—was
fortified by another great moment when, that very day, at 6:15 p.m. President Harry S. Tru-
man, on behalf of the United States of America, recognized the reborn State of Israel.
It was indeed a day for congratulations, for a collective Mazel Tov, for rejoicing, for
repetition of the ancient Hebrew words :
Having labored and struggled to provide a
homeland and freedom for the survivors from
Nazism and for those who choose to live a
Jewish life in a land where they can mould
their own destiny, it now is our responsibility
to help them defend their freedom and to
provide them not only with the sinews of war
but also with the means with which to fortify
their economic structure.
There is one major weapon for defense and
reconstruction: • THE ALLIED JEWISH
CAMPAIGN.
It is regrettable that the $1,250,000 neces-
sary to complete the $6,200,000 campaign goal
makes it necessary, in this historic hour, to
speak of fund-raising. But we must recog-
nize realities.. The United Jewish Appeal, the
major Allied Jewish Campaign beneficiary,
provides the funds that are necessary both
for defense—through the United Palestine.
Appeal—and for reconstruction and settle-
ment—through the Joint Distribution Com-,
mittee. The MAZEL TOV we offer to our-
selves, to our friends and to the People Israel
will be complete only if the means for de-
fense and reconstruction are fully provided.
"1-lazor'im be-dimha, be-rinha yiktzoru"—they who sow in tears shall reap with
joy.
It was more than a coincidence that on the Sabbath after the Day of Liberation—ori
May 15—the Prophetic selection read in synagogues throughout the world was from the
ninth chapter of Amos. The Prophet speaks of returning the captives of Israel and he declares:
"They shall build the waste places and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards,
and drink the wine thereof they shall also make gardens and eat the fruits of them. And
I shall plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be plucked out of their land
which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God."
Prophecy and hope have kept our people alive. Prophecy and hope have been our
mandates for Zion, not man-made instruments which men have tried to destroy. The word of
the Lord, the Scriptures, were our mandates, not the promises which men of ill will tried to
break.
But the same prophecy which motivated Jewish idealism and courage also has moti-
vated the encouragement we have been given by the Balfours and the Wilsons, by the tens
of thousands of Christian supporters of the Zionist cause, by men and women of good will
throughout the world.
It is the indestructible faith and courage that has won, and in our hour of joy we giv6
thanks to the Almighty for having made real for us the words our people have recited for
thousands of years: "Ze Hayom oso Hashem, nagilah ve-nismechah bo"—this is the day
that has been created by the Lord, we rejoice in it.
We are thankful to President Truman for having acted promptly with courage and
dignity on the day of Israel's Liberation: It is true that it was a day of self-liberation—and
only through self-liberation can a people be freed. No one can give liberty to any one else.
Liberty must be earned, and in our case it had to be fought for. Only auto-emancipation is
honorable, and we have redeemed our honor. Nevertheless, President Truman's speedy ac-
tion in recognizing the State of Israel has speeded the implementation of the State and has
eased the tension of the Jews of America. We are not ungrateful for it.
The tens of thousands of Christians who have given us encouragement in our effort§
will be remembered in the annals of 'Israel as the Hassidei Umot HaOlem—the blessed and
the saintly among the nations of the world.
,
Perhaps the 1948 $250,000,000 United Jew-
ish Appeal—and Detroit's $6,200,000 Allied
Jewish Campaign—are only the beginning in
the great efforts to defend and to build, to
protect lives and to create a strong economy.
Let us, therefore, be prepared for action. And
let us first of all complete the job we have
undertaken for the Allied Jewish Campaign
in this Year of Destiny.

Sabbath Scriptural Selections
This Sabbath, the thirteenth day of Iyar, 5708,
the following Scriptural selections will be read in
our synagogues:
Pentateuchal portion—Lev. 21:1-24:23.
Prophetical portion—Ezek. 44:15-31.
Lag b'Omer occurs on Thursday, May 2'7
"Ze hayom kivinu lo"—this is the day for which we had hoped, and in the days
of rejoicing we recall with reverence the names of the pioneers who had established the
foundation for the redeemed Eretz Israel, the leaders from Herzl and Nordau, from
Smolenskin and Kalischer and Pinsker, down to Weizmann and Silver and Wise and
Lipsky and Ben-Gurion and Shertok.
It is a great day on which we are able to greet the first President of the State and
People of Israel : Dr. Chaim Weizmann. He has labored and struggled for a free Zion. He
has been betrayed by many and was given a raw deal by his adopted land to which he had
contributed so much of his scientific skill. But—all is well that ends well, and we are happy,
that President Weizmann has lived to see the day of the fulfillment of prophecy. It is our
sincere prayer that he will be granted strength to carry on the effort for complete reconstruc-
tion of Israel's destiny and that Great Britain may be among our strongest allies, alongside:
with the United States of America whose leaders have given us so much courage.
To the leaders of the Government Israel and to the builders of the State GT_ Israel
say : CHAZAK VE'EMATZ ! May your hands be strengthened with the help of God and thg
entire People Israel.
