Maurice Schwartz Presents Famous
Version of 'Shylock' Here on May 24

Maurice Schwartz and his entire Art Theater Co. cast will be
brought to Detroit Monday evening, May 24, in the main auditorium
of the Masonic Temple, for presentation of one of the greatest pro-
ductions of all time—"Shylock and His Daughter"—Abraham Litt-
Man, local manager, announced this week.

There are numerous variations in
"Shylock
His Daughter." The play
the land made pilgrimages 'to New is replete and
with quotations from the
York to see this new version of Psalms chanted by the Rabbis in the

play. The*Sephardic pronunciatoin is
used, apparently- because of its use by
the Sephardic Jews.
While the basic Shakesperean theme
is retained, the major portion of the
two-act drama—in 14 scenes—is a
deviation from the original in order
to give it the strictly Jewish touch. In
a sense, because of the. emphasis on
rescuing incarcerated Jews and the
need for "Pidyon . Shvuyim"—the play
acquires a modern touch.
In another sense, Morro's insistence
upon revenge is reminiscent of the
modern Irgunist principles. In the
end, 'as indicated, Shylock reverts to
JeWish ideals and asserts that he can-
not shed blood.
