DURING WAR . . . group of
gals received much applause for
work .. . in, sewing hundreds of
lap robes for wounded vets, lay-
ettes for orphaned babies and
cancer pads .. . Today, although
unsung, they're still at it and
doing a highly commendable job
.. . Army hospitals receive lap
obes (16 were just sent to Levi
emorial Hospital • in. Hot
Springs) . . layettes are being
made and sent to Hadassah Hos-
pital in Palestine ... . and the
Ameridan Cancer Society is re-
ceiving many cancer pads . . .
Most of this work is done by
hand.. . . but a sewing machine
has been the major cog in finish-
ng the needed products . . . And
this is where we folks of the
Community come in . . That
sewing machine has finally ended
is last stitch . . . and is beyond
epair . . . The Sewing Group
of Louis Marshall Women need
one in good condition or the pace
of, their splendid work will suffer
. . Whoever donates another
sewing machine will .become part
of a great and meritous under-
taking.

MARTIN KOHN, electrical en-
gineer, loveS to . play golf . . .
but Mrs. Kohn say'she'll have to
lose much of his paunchy front-
age before getting anywhere on
e greens, this season . L . Seems
at now when he tees the bat},
where he can hit it, he can't see
it . . . and if he puts the ball
where he can see' it . . . he can't
hit it!

CHARLEY CHANEY . . . the
great comedy star . . and wife,
Libby, are so much. in love that
folks often take them for newly-
weds . . . Fact is though, that
they've been married for' years
. . . She came in from Chicago,
last week, to see him at Cafe
Burgundy . . . and about the only
times they weren't holding hands
was while he froliced for boss-
man, Pete Parker, and the peo-
ple who can't stop laughing with
him and manager, Jack Gold ..
Charley and Libby have a seven-
and-a-half-year-old son, Victor,
who thinks that mom and pop

.

.

"smooch too much!" ... -Charley
started out in show biz as a con-
cert mandolin player but drop-
ped that a number of years ago
when friends told him he was
using the wrong talent . . . They
proved correct for he is now easi-
ly one of America's leading
comedy performers . . . Its hard
to believe, but Charley can give
a full six-hour performance
without _using the same material
twice! . . . If you've seen hilt,
you know what we mean when
we say he's sensational!

IRVING HABER visited sales-
man friend at local jewelry jernt
where watches were being ad-
vertised for $10 . . • Decided to
buy one for young son, Dickie,
but asked how the store could
sell the watch so cheap and still
'make a profit . . . Salesman friend
said, "Believe me, Irv, there's
no profit on that watch .. . it's
all in repairing them!"

LILLIAN MESSENGER was,
at one time, a make-up artist in
Hollywood ... and also with Vir-
ginia Farrell the beauty stylist
. . . Her ideas about how women
should apply make-up have been
widely taken up ... as very help-
ful ways for bringing out beauty
by carefully applying it through
facial study . . . She is more
readily known among women as
Lee Drake.
* * *
VARIED OPINIONS regarding
film, "Gentlemen's . Agreement,"
has done much to cause interest
in the movie against Anti-Semi-
tism . . but a great number of
people seem to believe that it
should have also brought out
points favoring the Jew . ..
rather than restricting itself to
showing that Anti-Semitism ex-
ists . . . which everyone already
knows . . . The film was thorough
in making accusations but still
left a solemn "So what?" in the
minds of many . . . who found
it to be a very nice love story.

AROUND TOWN .. . Druggist
Al Diamond exhibiting the fancy
rhumba steps he picked up • in
Florida . . . but unable to find

you owe me, I'll tell your other
creditors that you did."

AS WAS EXPECTED, the an-
nual show put on by Mezeritch-
er group, last week, was another
big success for the swell fellows
and gals . . About .1100 folks

into a huge 4, cabaret-styled set-
