Yeshivath Beth Yehudah Students Double Their Gifts to Allied Campaign 2—THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 7, 1948 Bevin Uses Rough Language Agains Jews in Commons LONDON, (JTA) — Foreign Secretary Bevin told the House of Commons that Britain intends to withdraw the Arab Legion from Palestine before May 15. He said, however, that British arms and subsidies will continue to be supplied to King Abdullah after that date. The Foreign Secretary declar- ed that contracts with Arab states are being carried out as - speedily as possible.. He said he refused to interfere with the delivery of arms and munitions to Arab states until the UN decision is received. "It seems • to me," he said, "that the Jews have the best arms." .A comment by M. P. Maurice Edelman that "murder will be committed before—you do any- thing". provoked the . rejoinder from Bevin, given amidSt cheers, that "the .British sergeants were not hanged by Arabs." Bevin ad- ded: "I say to the Jews and to the Arabs — the Arabs are not in this House — that the way for both of you to settle this is to stop fighting." 29, when 'Rabbi Morris Max of New York addressed their first assembly. Magnes' political activities. Dr. Magnes, who had come to the U. S. to speak in support of the trusteeship plan before the UN Political Committee, has limited 'support either in Palestine—lkhere his Ihud party numbers a handful of people— or in this country. His views have repeatedly been rejected by the Hebrew University's student body. The fact that the Hebrew Uni- versity Senate, while rejecting Dr. Magnes' political activities, cabled a message of greeting and encouragement to Moshe Shertok is an indication of its complete repudiation of its chancellor. Perhaps the advent of a Jewish State also will witness a change in leadership in the Hebrew University, where Chancellor, Senate and Faculty will be able to agree on major Jewish issues. Dr. Magnes, by his lat- est discipline-breaking acts, certainly has lost the right to retain his high position in the Hebrew University. Seymour Lipkin Named 'Outstanding Young Pianist in the United States' For Top Bank Posts NEW YORK, (JPS) — Two German bankers who held top positions in the Nazi economic hierachy have been named by the German board of directors to the two highest posts in the new tri- zonal bank, Deutsche Laender (Bank of German States), New York Times correspondent Jack Raymond reported from Frank- furt. The men are Herman J. Abs and August . Schniewind, who have been named as president and chairman respectively of the new trizonal bank. —International Sounclphotos "Outstanding Young Pianist in the United States" is the title of 20-year-old Seymour Lipkin, son of Dr. and Mrs. Ezra Lipkin of Detroit, who sits at the piano in New York with Pianist Vladimir Horowitz and Mrs. Sergei Rachmaninoff, widow of the composer whose estate made possible the Rachmaninoff Fund piano contest and the $1,000 first prize. Pianist Lipkin, whose fame is spreading throughout the land, is, in addition to being a concert pianist, an apprentice conductor with the Cleveland .Symphony Orchestra. He soon will begin a concerti tour of the United States. The $1,000 award is an advance on ai recording contract. He won the first national piano contest for the Rachmaninoff Fund award in Carnegie Hall, New York, April 29, in competition with four other young pianists in the finale of a contest that has run for +Yid years and is considered the most rigid ever conducted in this country, Lipkin has been playing the piano since he was two years old. Lipkin's triumph in the contest means a big-time career undef, the joint management of Columbia Artists, Inc., and the National' Concerts and Artists Corporation. - His first in a series of radio engagements will be on May 17 with the Telephone Hour, over a national hookup. More than 10 of the nation's principal orchestras already have agreed to give the Rachmaninoff Fund winner appearances as soloist at regular contract fees and Victor has given him a recording corm' tract. Besides, there are assurances of many recital contracts. It ist believed that his income in this—the first—year of his victory will' be in excess of $25,000. Between You and M By BORIS SMOLAR (Copyright. 1948, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) - The Palestine Situation Everything points to the possibility that the Palestine battle will be fought not at Lake Success, but in Palestine proper „ Things have been permitted to go too far in Palestine to be checked by paper resolutions . . The appointment in Washington of General John Hilldring to the post of special assistant to the Secretary of State for Palestine affairs came too late to make matters easier ... The only good thing about this appointment is the fact that Loy Henderson, the anti-Zionist chief of the Near Eastern Division in the State De. partment, will now be practically eliminated from influencing the U.S policy regarding Palestine . He will be completely subordinated to Gen. Hilldring on matters relating to Palestine. It is taken for granted that the Arab Legion will march into Palestine on. May 16 under orders from King Abdullah of Transjor• dais--. • . The question is only; How far will the Legion march? , . The Jews will display no opposition to the invasion by Transjordan forces of the Arab part of Palestine, but they will fight 'any effort ort the part of the Arab Legion to occupy territory assigned to the Jewish state under the UN partition plan. Even though the U.S. would be willing to participate in a police force for Palestine, well-informed sources indicate that no American troops would be sent there without the acquiescence of both Jewish and Arab leaders. The Domestic Front - Jewish communities throughout the country have now been given advice as to how to treat rabble-rousers . . . A set of instructions, prepared by major Jewish civic defense organizations, has been re. leased by the National Community Relations Adverisory Council .. , They urge not according any public action to local meetings of incur"- sequential demagogues who have no appreciable measure of local support . . . In cases where an anti-Semitic speaker is likely to attract even minor support from reputable or, unwary elements, different tactics should be adopted . . They are not to include picketing, but orderly distribution of leaflets may be useful , Ade. quate preparation should also be made to invoke, if necessary, exist. ing laws pertaining to breaches of the peace and incitement to riot Practically all the important Jewish organizations believe that the "quarantine treatment," which to the rabble-rouser of the benefit of publicity, has proven to be very effective . . . They advise that there should be no public statement denouncing the rabble- rouser before one of his slated appearances ... Such statements, they point out, tend to magnify the man's prestige and heighten its influ- ence among his followers They advertise his meeting and increase attendance ... Derogatory statements in the press, after the rabble- rouser has left the community, may be used when local circum- stances warrant it . . . Especially when the rabble-rouser succeeded in obtaining publicity for himself prior to or during the meeting . Counter-rallies, conducted at the same time as the rabble rouser's meeting, have proven to be ,generally ineffective. -
